Thread: Obama-Appointed Border Patrol Chief Resigns After Wall Order

One day after President Donald J. Trump signed two executive orders with respect to border security and constructing a wall, the chief of the U.S. Border Patrol resigned.

On Thursday morning, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection website posted a notice confirming the departure of U.S Border Patrol Chief Mark Morgan:

On behalf of the men and women of U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the U.S. Border Patrol, I want to thank Mark Morgan for his unwavering dedication to our border security mission, and recognize his life-long career in service to the nation. Mark Morgan’s career spans more than 31 years of faithful service to the nation, including service in the U.S. Marine Corps, as a local deputy sheriff and police officer, 20 years in the FBI, as Assistant Commissioner of CBP’s Office of Internal Affairs, and, finally, as Chief of the U.S. Border Patrol.

The statement was drafted by acting CBP Commissioner Kevin McAleelan who assumed command after Gil Kerlikowske stepped down on the day Trump was inaugurated.

Both Morgan and Kerlikowske were appointed to their position by former President Barack Obama at a time when border agents were admittedly being overwhelmed by human smuggling organizations.

During a visit to the border, Kerlikowske claimed there was no future for Trump’s wall and has often said the border is secure.

As Breitbart Texas has reported, members of the union that represents U.S. Border Patrol agents, the National Border Patrol Council, have stated that the previous administration including Morgan tied their hands in regards to resources, policies, and other measures, as well as advocating for lax immigration laws.

On the day that Trump signed his executive orders, members of the NBPC stated that it gave them the tools needed to do their job.

Well, if a wall causes Morgan to resign, then that tells you all you need to know about him, his cohorts in failure and the Obama who appointed him. The only people against the wall are people on the take with the drug cartels.

He supported "Catch and Release" and other non enforcement measures of Obama. Thankfully he left. He did not follow the immigration laws faithfully.

Border Patrol Chief Mark Morgan will be leaving job, the agency announced Thursday, after just seven months on the job.

His departure comes just a day after President Trump issued a broad set of new directives to Border Patrol agents to step up enforcement of existing laws.

Customs and Border Protection announced the move in a brief statement thanking Chief Morgan for his long government service, including 20 years in the FBI

His last day will be Jan. 31.

Chief Morgan made news last year when he disagreed with the Obama administration’s stance on the new illegal immigrant surge, saying lax enforcement policies were enticing more migrants to attempt to breach the border.

He also said he was having to pull his trained agents off their duties to act as “child care providers” for the children being nabbed at the border.

No reason was given for Chief Morgan’s departure, but he has tangled with the National Border Patrol Council, the labor union that represents line agents. The NBPC had wanted to see someone promoted from within the ranks, rather than someone from another law enforcement agency put in the leadership post.

The NBPC has become a powerful political force after endorsing Mr. Trump in the presidential election.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Border Patrol chief has been forced out a day after President Donald Trump announced an ambitious plan to build a wall at the Mexican border and hire 5,000 Border Patrol agents, a U.S. official told The Associated Press on Thursday.

Mark Morgan told senior Border Patrol agents about his ouster during a brief video conference on Thursday morning, saying he was asked to leave and that he decided to resign rather than fight the request, according to the official, who was on the call. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the discussion was not intended to be made public.

Customs and Border Protection said Morgan's last official day in office will be Tuesday.

Morgan was named to the post in June and took office in October. The former FBI agent briefly led the internal affairs department at the Border Patrol's parent agency before heading the agency of roughly 20,000 agents.

In a statement, Kevin McAleenan, the Customs and Border Protection's acting commissioner, praised Morgan for "his unwavering dedication to our border security mission" and "lifelong career in service to the nation."

Morgan leaves office only seven months after being named the first outsider to lead the agency since it was founded in 1924.

From the start, he clashed with the Border Patrol's union, which endorsed Trump early and forcefully during the presidential campaign. The National Border Patrol Council had advocated for an insider to lead the agency and sharply criticized Morgan at almost every turn.

The former official said Morgan was not at work yesterday and did not attend a gathering at the Homeland Security Department with Trump and newly appointed Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly.

During that visit Trump singled out the union's president, Brandon Judd, while pointedly avoiding mention of Morgan. Judd served on Trump's transition team.

The union was incensed when Morgan told a Senate hearing Dec. 1, in response to a question from Sen. Tom Carper, D-Del., that he supported a comprehensive immigration overhaul, which is often interpreted to include a path to citizenship for people who are in the country illegally. Morgan clarified his remarks in a note to Border Patrol staff the following week.

"I want to be clear what my position is regarding immigration reform," Morgan wrote. "I do not, as some have suggested, support what is often referred to as 'blanket amnesty.' This assertion could not be further from my position. I encourage everyone to listen to my testimony."

Despite pressure from the union, many agency officials said Morgan appeared to embrace the job. Less than a week ago, the first message on his new Twitter account read, "Chief Morgan here -- excited to use this account to share the latest news and events of the #BorderPatrol with followers."
