Obama Ends Illegal Immigration Arrest Quotas

LOS ANGELES -- The head of Immigration and Customs Enforcement says arrest quotas are no longer being used in a program aimed at tracking down immigrants who have skirted court orders to leave the country.

John Morton, assistant secretary of homeland security for ICE, has told reporters in Los Angeles Monday that one of the changes he made since taking office this year was to end the use of arrest quotas to motivate agents.

Morton declined to state how widespread the use of quotas was previously or which quotas he suspended. He says the change would not affect the agency's work to find and arrest immigrants who don't heed their deportation orders.

Agency records show that each fugitive tracking team was assigned to arrest at least 1,000 fugitive immigrants in 2006.
