Obama: Immigration issue is being 'demagogued'

Sep 28, 2010 President Obama is holding a backyard discussion with residents in Albuquerque -- including a discussion of the tricky political issue of immigration.

    Some play-by-play:

12:09 p.m. -- Obama thanks Andy and Etta Cavalier for opening up their home for the event. He thanks local politicians, including Gov. Bill Richardson. He says he likes doing backyard events in part because "it gets me out of the house." He also gets a chance to talk to real folks.

He says he'll take questions on anything, but first wants to talk about education, which he calls the top factor for long-term economic prosperity. "Nothing else comes close," he says. Yet the trends are bad in terms of college graduates, as well as math and science education. He says he doesn't think his education initiatives have gotten enough attention, and he describes efforts to raise education standards and improve the student loan program.

Obama says education policy is one of the many things at stake in the Nov. 2 elections. He claims that Republican insistence on tax breaks for the wealthy will lead to cutbacks in education programs.

12:26 p.m. -- Question time: The first comes from a woman who asks about changes in the immigration system, a big issue in New Mexico.

Obama again endorses "comprehensive immigration reform," which tightens the borders and creates a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants in the USA. He expresses skepticism about legislation any time soon because "unfortunately, right now, this is getting demagogued." But he says a new immigration policy remains a priority.

12:32 p.m. -- A man asks what is being done to help keep people in their homes.

Obama says the housing crisis helped precipitate the financial crisis. He cites programs to help people get adjustments on their mortgage payments. He says a growing economy will help all homeowners.

We're breaking away for breaking news -- will update.

    1. a person, esp. an orator or political leader, who gains power and popularity by arousing the emotions, passions, and prejudices of the people.

Hmm. Sounds like Mr. Hope and Change himself.

in ancient times, a popular leader who represented the ordinary people

If Obama is utilizing the above definition for the people that oppose the Dream Act AMNESTY Bill he is correct but I suspect he is just being his normal arrogant, condescending, and elitist self.

There is already a pathway for legal immigrants; the term illegal should lead to only one pathway - out of the country. I don't care what anyone says when a person or persons shows disrespect for our laws and country by breaking them they do not deserve to become a citizen.

Yes, and as usual, not one word about immigrants undercutting increasingly desperate Americans.
