Obama to pick Sotomayor for Supreme Court-official

Obama to pick Sotomayor for Supreme Court-official
    Tue May 26, 2009 8:42am EDT

WASHINGTON, May 26 (Reuters) - President Barack Obama has decided to nominate Appeals Judge Sonia Sotomayor to fill the U.S. Supreme Court seat being vacated by liberal Justice David Souter, a White House official said.

Sotomayor would be the first Latino member of the nine-member U.S. high court, which decides such divisive social issues as abortion and the death penalty as well as business and property rights cases.

An announcement of the nomination was scheduled for 10:15 a.m. (1415 GMT), the White House official said, speaking on condition on anonymity.

Since Souter, 69, belonged to the court's liberal wing, Obama's nomination of Sotomayor was considered unlikely to change the ideological makeup of the court. The court's members are appointed for life but require Senate confirmation.

Sotomayor, 54, is a judge on the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New York and a graduate of Yale Law School.

Obama may have picked her in order to throw the illegal alien community (who the MSM calls Hispanics) a bone, and therefore keep them happy in case Obama doesn't give them the amnesty that they want.

    what some are saying..........

Is she the smartest of the smart or just smartest of the Mexicans? In that New Haven firefighters decision, she ruled in favor of the city that threw out the results of the test because no blacks passed the test. A big WHAT IF the city had thrown out the test results because not enough whites passed? Her decision gives you a clue of the illogical thought process of this nominee. Elections do matter!

She is a rabid, ethno-centrist, ...she rules based on emotions, not the law and acknowledges that her personal experience and bias in favor of minorities espcially, Hispanics guides her decisions...

    Here's a quote...........

But Sotomayor's work as a judge is not without controversy. During a speech at the University of California at Berkeley, Sotomayor said, "I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life."

This doesn't bode well for Americans. This is a candidate that La RAZA and MALDEF have been lobbying OBAMA for since he was elected.....anyone that LA RAZA endorses is BAD for Americans.

Possible Obama Supreme Court Pick Slapped Down Reverse Discrimination Case in One-Paragraph Opinion
    Friday, May 08, 2009

(CNSNews.com) – U.S. Appeals Court Judge Sonia Sotomayor, mentioned as a possible Supreme Court nominee, voted to deny a racial discrimination claim in a 2008 decision. She dismissed the case in a one-paragraph statement that, in the opinion of one dissenting judge, ignored the evidence and did not even address the constitutional issues raised by the case.

The case, Ricci v. DeStefano, involved a group of 19 white firefighters and one Hispanic firefighter who filed suit in 2003 claiming that the city of New Haven, Conn., engaged in racial discrimination when it threw out the results of two promotion tests because none of the city’s black applicants had passed the tests.

Each of the plaintiffs had passed the exam. The case is currently before the U.S. Supreme Court.

The city threw out the results because it feared potential lawsuits from activist groups if few or no minority candidates were promoted. The city also claimed that in addition to potential lawsuits, promotions based on the test results would undermine their goal of diversity in the Fire Department.

The firefighters sued, arguing that New Haven was discriminating against them by deciding that the tests would promote too many white candidates and too few minorities.

Federal Judge Janet Bond Arterton rejected the firefighters’ appeal, siding with the city and saying that no racial discrimination had occurred because the city didn’t promote anyone at all.

U.S. Appeals Court Judge Sotomayor issued an order that affirmed Arterton’s decision, issuing a one-paragraph judgment that called Arterton’s ruling “thorough, thoughtful, and well reasoned,â€

so she has already ruled? lets hope this gets to the supreme court and has a hearing before she gets nominated and can again screw the firefighters.

maybe she will have to excuse herself from voting and registering an opinion since shes already ruled

Based on the media rumblings, evidently the party expects him to pick minorities and a woman. She will fit two of those requirements.

This must mean that Obama doesn't poll as well with women.

You know, that has nothing to do with gender, but it has to do with maternity and preservation of offspring but I guess Liberals don't understand that.
