NEW YORK—Congressman Jose Serrano secured a $300,000 Citizenship Grant from the Department for Homeland Security for the Northern Manhattan Coalition for Immigrants Rights NMCIR-Bronx Project.

The project will provide legal and educational services to immigrants of the Bronx, including filing for citizenship and naturalization, ESL classes and civic education classes in preparation for citizenship exams.

"We are proud to introduce this new project to the Bronx community," explained Executive Director of NMCIR Raquel Batista. "NMCIR has over 25 years of experience working with and organizing the immigrant community on the issues of family reunification, detention, deportation and citizenship. NMCIR Bronx Project now has the true support it needs to provide high quality services to the Bronx."

"In a borough where 30 percent of the population is foreign born, it is critical that, as one of the few organizations of this kind in the Bronx, we provide high quality legal and educational support to the underserved immigrant population of the Bronx," said the deputy director of NMCIR, Angela Fernandez, who will be heading up the new office in the Bronx.

Immigration Advocates Protest Federal Reform Plan

Children of Deported Parents Suffer Immigration advocates are speaking out against President Bush's plan to reform laws they say will hurt children.

The group "Families for Freedom" gathered outside the Javits Federal Building on Saturday, joined by kids whose immigrant parents have either been detained or deported.

"We see that it's a huge impact on children emotionally, psychologically. They begin to do worse in school, not want to eat, not want to sleep – you know – they go into a depression," said Raquel Batista of the Coalition for Immigrant Rights. Read more and see video.
