Fraudulent Border Patrol Applicant Removed from U.S.

(Friday, February 13, 2009)

Detroit – On Tuesday, a man that had previously applied for a position with the U.S. Border Patrol was officially removed from the country.

In September, Detroit Sector Border Patrol agents arrested an Albanian citizen who had recently applied to become a Border Patrol agent.

Agents became suspicious about the applicant’s citizenship during the oral hiring boards portion of the hiring process. The boards consist of a panel of three Border Patrol agents who interview the applicant through a series of law enforcement related scenarios. Before the interview began, the applicant stated that he recently gained his United States citizenship.

After the interview and as part of the background investigation process, agents learned that the applicant was not a United States citizen – which is a requirement for the job. Agents also learned that when he submitted his application, he affirmed that he was a United States citizen. Making a false claim to United States citizenship is a felony and punishable by imprisonment and a fine.

On Tuesday, Jugert Haxhiu, 27, was removed from the United States by an Immigration Judge for falsely and willfully claiming United States Citizenship.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation's borders at and between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.
