Authorities: Officer shoots, wounds person at San Diego border checkpoint
By Associated Press, Updated: Thursday, September 22, 7:33 PM
SAN DIEGO — Authorities say a border officer shot and wounded a person at a San Diego border checkpoint.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency spokeswoman Jackie Wasiluk says the shooting happened Thursday afternoon at the San Ysidro Port of Entry, in the area used to process pedestrians crossing the border into the United States.
In a statement, Wasiluk says the agency has temporarily suspended processing northbound pedestrian travelers at the checkpoint, but hopes to resume processing soon.
It was unclear what led to the shooting.
A Fire Department spokesman says the person shot was not an officer, and was taken to a trauma center for treatment. Two other people suffered bumps and bruises in the fray.
The nationalities of the injured were not immediately known.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Authorities say two border officers shot and wounded a man at a San Diego border crossing after he grew nervous under questioning, ran and fired a starter pistol.
Thursday afternoon's shooting prompted U.S. Customs and Border Protection to temporarily suspend pedestrian travel into the United States from Mexico.
San Diego Police Lt. Kevin Rooney says starter pistols are used in horse or car races and are not lethal, but to the naked eye the metallic object appeared to be a weapon. The man was taken to a trauma center for treatment.
Rooney said he didn't know the man's nationality or how many times he was struck.
Police will investigate whether the border officers' use of force was justified. Federal authorities will determine if the man should face charges.

Custom agents shoot man at San Ysidro border crossing
Authorities investigate an officer-involved shooting at the San Ysidro border crossing Thursday afternoon. The shooting occurred in the area where U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers process pedestrians crossing into the United States from Mexico, federal officials said. — Earnie Grafton
A pedestrian trying to cross the U.S.-Mexico border without proper screening was shot by two Customs officers Thursday evening after he pulled a gun that was later determined to be a fake, San Diego police said.
The man suffered wounds that were not believed to be life-threatening and was taken to a hospital, where he was undergoing surgery, said police homicide Lt. Kevin Rooney. The man identified himself and said he was 47 years old, but officers had not yet been able to confirm the name or where the man lived, Rooney said.
The shooting at the San Ysidro Port of Entry created a panic in the busy area, said Enrique Guzman, 62, of Tijuana, who said he was working nearby as a baggage handler and saw the shooting. He said people hit the ground after hearing the shots.
Keenan Machado, 27, of Encinitas, was in line when the shooting occurred. He was returning from a dentist appointment in Tijuana. He said some women in the area fell to the ground and began praying.
