YUMA, Ariz. Two San Luis police officers who fired at a van filled with illegal immigrants have been cleared of wrongdoing and returned to duty.

San Luis officials say an investigation by the Yuma County Sheriff's Department found the officers were protecting themselves from a serious threat when they shot at the van as it sped towards them at 70 miles per hour.

The decision didn't please a Yuma attorney representing one of the wounded migrants. Lawyer James Metcalf says San Luis officers Joel Sauceda and Paulino Lara used excessive force when they shot and wounded three people in the van. He says he plans to file a lawsuit.

The U-S Border Patrol spotted the van on August 14th after it picked up a group of illegal immigrants. The driver turned around and started heading back to Mexico, and the Border Patrol called in the San Luis police for help.
