ARIZONA DAILY STAR
The man whose body was found Saturday burning on the Southeast Side was a Mexican national living in Tucson, a Sheriff's official said Wednesday.

Jonas Mendivil Gastelum, 32, was shot and his body was set on fire near East Old Vail Connection and South Swan roads, said Deputy Dawn Barkman, a Pima County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman.

A couple driving west on Old Vail Road shortly after 6 p.m. Saturday spotted a fire in the desert and after a closer look realized it was a body burning, Barkman said. They immediately called 911.

On Monday, Gastelum's widow called the Sheriff's department and said she believed the victim was her husband, and dental records were used to verify the identity of the body, Barkman said.

Deputies have not identified any suspects or a motive for the slaying.

The homicide unit is continuing to investigate, Barkman said.

According to court records, Gastelum has three prior arrests for the illegal possession, sale or transfer of marijuana.
