OH - 10 Ohioans charged with marriage scam

10 Ohioans charged with marriage scam
    March 7, 2009

CINCINNATI (AP) - Federal authorities have accused 10 people of taking part in an operation that involved sham marriages for immigrants.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials say the complex scheme involved "arrangers" who helped immigrants who overstayed their visas find brides and put together false personal histories.

Authorities dubbed their investigation "Honeymoon's Over." They declined to say how much money was involved, but said women were paid to marry the men while organizers kept the rest of the money.

Authorities unsealed indictments Friday charging the suspects with conspiracy to commit marriage fraud, which carries a possible prison sentence of five years. Most of the suspects live in southwest Ohio or northern Kentucky.

Authorities said four others were arrested late last year and more arrests are possible.

In the 1990s I got offered $10,000 to marry an 18-year old kid from Romania (by my insurance agent, no less). Long story short, about a week later, after I laughed and insulted the agent, he approached a good friend of mine with the same offer, but only for $5,000.

I have had Latinos ask me for my Social Security Number and say it will help you out some day. What logic, right?

But what bothers me further is the hiring of anchor babies in the Social Security Office.
