Americans Urge Immigration Agents to Raid Smithfield Plant in North Carolina
November 28, 2006 10:28 PM EST

A national organization with many supporters in North Carolina is urging their NC and national supporters to contact Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and request a raid on the Smithfield Packing Company’s processing plant in Tar Heel, NC for knowingly hiring illegal aliens.

"We applaud Smithfield Foods Incorporated's initial efforts to screen out illegal alien employees," said William Gheen of Americans for Legal Immigration Political Action Committee.

"But they have rehired these illegal aliens who are using fraudulent documents and stolen identities. Smithfield Foods Inc. is now knowingly violating federal law. We want ICE to come and do the job taxpayers pay them to do. We want ICE and Smithfield Packing to remove all illegal aliens from their workforce immediately," he said in a statement released by ALIPAC.

ALIPAC's citizen activists will begin calling, e-mailing, and faxing federal authorities and Smithfield Foods Inc. today to demand immediate action to remove all illegal alien employees from their workforce, according to Gheen's statement.

According to ALIPAC, a few weeks ago, Smithfield Foods discovered that an estimated 600 of their employees had social security numbers on file that did not match their names recorded at the Social Security Administration.

The company subsequently fired 75 of these employees for providing false documents and information. Labor unions seized on the issue and hundreds of Latino workers walked off the job in protest.

In response to the union-backed walkout, Smithfield Foods caved in to the pressure and rehired the illegal aliens that had provided false information.

This plant is considered to be the world's largest hog slaughtering plant.

Recent studies have shown that illegal aliens have depressed wages in North Carolina and are a burden to NC taxpayers, said Gheen. Studies also indicate that North Carolina is a top national destination for illegal aliens. Every few weeks there are new reports of more North Carolinians killed by drunk driving illegal aliens.

"We are not going to pay the extra costs of lost taxes, depressed wages, lost jobs, and spilled American blood for Smithfield Packing's cheap illegal labor force,” Gheen said.

"We will push for the ICE raid and for the company to obey the law or we may have to launch national boycott of their products," he warned.

Aiding and abetting illegal aliens to remain unlawfully in the US is a federal felony under Section 8 USC 1324(a)(1)(A)(iv)(b)(iii) Employers that intentionally hire illegal labor face fines and possible jail time.

Pork Products and BBQ are very popular in N.C. Polls show a high level and rising degree of concern about illegal immigration in the state. Smithfield Foods Inc now faces an organized protest response from citizens that buy their products. ALIPAC and FIRE Coalition are the directors of the National Miller Brewing Boycott which includes over 100 organizations at <www.millerboycott.com> Miller Brewing's sales have declined during the boycott.

Meanwhile, the Mecklenburg County, NC, Sheriff's Office announced that nearly 1,000 criminal aliens had been identified and charged with immigration violations thanks to a partnership between the Sheriff's deputies and Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. One hundred and twenty eight of those identified have already been deported.

U.S. Representative Sue Myrick (NC-9) praised the early success of the program: “This new program changes how North Carolina responds to illegal aliens. This program provides us with some much-needed back up and real results.”

"The mission of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office is to protect the citizens of Mecklenburg County," says Sheriff Jim Pendergraph. "I take those words very seriously. The 287(g) program is just another way to successfully remove from our country illegal aliens who prey on our citizens and commit crimes in our community."

The partnership between ICE and MCSO began in February, when the agencies announced that they had reached an agreement for ICE to train and certify selected MCSO personnel to perform certain federal immigration enforcement functions.

ICE has offered to train and certify police officers and deputy sheriffs throughout the country, but only a few departments have taken advantage of the opportunity.
