(AP) LOS ANGELES Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa is calling to expand the police force to a record level by the end of next year to reinforce efforts to combat gangs.

He says the budget he will release next month calls for a net gain of more than 220 officers, which would bring the LAPD past its historic peak of around 9,900 by the end of 2008.

The proposed budget represents the second year of Villaraigosa's five-year effort to expand the police force by 1,000 officers.

The mayor says the boost is necessary to take on the city's 39,000 gang members.

Villaraigosa also said Thursday that he's asked Governor Schwarzenegger for an additional $30 million dollars to fund gang intervention, prevention and suppression programs.

There's no word on whether Schwarzenegger supports the request, but the governor says he does favor working with the mayor to eradicate gang violence.

Sanctuary cities will always have gang problems. What he needs to do is start deporting illegal aliens. Villaraigosa could save the city of Los Angeles by working with ICE.

That guy can't see to forest for all of the trees.

It's a monster he helped create! Yes, hire more cops and with Judicial Watch sueing Special Order 40, I hope they deport the illegals finally.

Anyone knw the demographics on the gangs in LA, what race they majority are composed of? My guess would be Latino, and my guess would be mainly illegals or children of illegals. Seems the mayor is getting exactly what he wanted, a city filled with his "raza" and all of it's loveliness.

Good luck Mayor Villaraigosa, you are going to need it to reign in all of those gangs you essentially invited in.
