Immigration Issue Looms Over Oklahoma Legislature

The sponsor of the law cracking down on illegal immigrants says he has no intention of giving in to pressure from Hispanic leaders, church officials and the business community. Republican State Representative Randy Terrill says House leaders plan to fight any effort to repeal or weaken the law and he says he'll offer even tougher restrictions during the upcoming session beginning February 4th.

Terrill says he'll sponsor a bill calling for a vote of the people to make English the official state language and bills to make it harder for illegal immigrants to go to college and allow law enforcement to seize property of those who harbor or transport illegal aliens.

But Republican state Senator Harry Coates has introduced one bill to repeal a part of the law that is to go into effect July 1st. That portion requires employers to verify the immigration status of employees or face legal action for hiring unauthorized illegal immigrants.

Coates says the idea behind tough immigration laws was to create an issue between Republicans and Democrats. But he says the plan backfired when Democrats refused to stop the bill.
