One in 20 Hispanics 'goes hungry'

Hispanics face many hurdles to get access to nutritious food
Five per cent of Hispanics in the US regularly go hungry and as many as 20% do not have sufficient access to nutritious food, a US report says.

Poverty and lack of awareness about state entitlements are the causes, says the study by Hispanic civil rights group the National Council of La Raza.

Immigrants also face a series of linguistic, legal and cultural obstacles in accessing enough food.

Hispanics are the biggest single minority group in the United States.

The study showed that the number of Hispanics going hungry was significantly higher than for non-Hispanic whites (3%), but lower than the figure for non-Hispanic blacks (8%).

A similar number of Hispanics and non-Hispanic blacks suffered from a lack of access to healthy food, around four times more than non-Hispanic whites.

"Lack of access to resources is forcing far too many Latino families into choices no-one should have to make, such as between having a roof over their heads or putting food on the table," said Janet Murguia, NCLR President and CEO.

"A lack of affordable, nutritious food also has devastating health consequences, such as increasing hunger and obesity, affecting not only the Latino community, but the well-being of our entire nation."

One of the authors of the study, Jennifer Ng'andu, said the Latino community was "practically invisible" when it came to the issues of hunger and malnutrition in the US.

What a crock! They probably aren't eating "nutritious" food, but they are eating a lot of junk food like a lot of people. It's the "paint the Hispanic as the poor innocent victim" routine. NCLR sets itself up as the "savior" of the Hispanic people and they have to paint them as oppressed, hungry, uneducated, downtrodden victims in order to get moral and monetary support. If they would focus their efforts on the legal Hispanics and stop monopolizing their time with the illegals and trying to justify everything they do, maybe they could do some good. The legal residents are the ones hurt most by the NCLR.

now wasn't there an article claiming that same thing a few months ago. I remember a discussion about it about how they end up sending most of the money they earn back to Mexico.

I'd really like to see just how the BBC came up with these numbers. Did they just take La Raza's word for it.

Perhaps La Raza has someone sitting on the border counting the hungry illegals as they cross over.

Poppycock! I can usually buy a whole chicken between $2.50 and $4.50 (depending on what sort of sale my local store is having). Taking the high figure, that's $1.12 each for a family of four. Vegetables like green beans can be added to the menu for less than $0.50 per serving, and mashed potatos round out a decent menu for about that much again. That's a nutritious meal for just over $2.00 per person. Healthy stews and casseroles can be easily made for the same or less.

The biggest problem for Hispanics is their traditional menu, which is high in starches like corn meal and short on green and particularly leafy vegetables. Beans and tortillas, even with meat and cheese added, do not make for a very nutritious diet without augmentation. Blame Mother Mexico and her cuisine, don't blame the US!
