Click to viewLooking for a new job in a struggling economy is hard work. Make it easier on yourself by getting to know the best tools for the task at hand.

Earlier this week we asked you to share your favorite online job search sites, and today we're back with the most popular answers. Keep reading for a detailed breakdown of the best sites around for finding work when you need it.

    Best Online Job Search Sites?

The recession has brought with it widespread layoffs, which means many of us will kick off the new…Read more

NOTE: Due to a few ties in the preliminary call for contenders, this Hive Five will actually feature six job search sites.

    Monster

Monster.com first opened its doors way back in 1994 (first called The Monster Board), and has since been a very popular destination for employers and employees alike looking to fill and find a job. With over a million job postings and over 150 million resumes at any one time (according to Wikipedia), Monster has one of the largest job search databases available. In addition to its job search and resume posting tools, Monster also offers career advice, a beta tool for researching companies, and more. From the sound of our call for contenders post, many of you have secured or been offered jobs through Monster.

    LinkedIn

    LinkedIn
is a social networking site along the lines of Facebook with an emphasis on building a work-related network.

Launched in 2003, LinkedIn quickly became a popular destination for workers looking to build their professional relationships. While LinkedIn isn't primarily a job search destination, the idea is simple enough: People get jobs from their professional network, so rather than digging through enormous search databases when you're looking for work, your LinkedIn network becomes an excellent resource for connecting with people in your field who know where you might be able to get good work.

    CareerBuilder

Along with Monster, CareerBuilder is the oldest job search site on the list (founded in 1995). Also like Monster, CareerBuilder's pages boast millions of job postings, hundreds of thousands of employers on the hunt for potential employees, and a whole lot more. Although many commenters have secured jobs from both Monster and CareerBuilder, others have also commented on receiving a fair amount of spam "opportunities" from them as well.

    HotJobs

    HotJobs
is another age-old job search engine that first started in 1996 (under another name), went through a few other changes, and was eventually purchased by Yahoo in 2002. HotJobs is a traditional job search engine cut from a similar cloth as Monster or CareerBuilder. When you head to HotJobs, you're searching a giant database of jobs. Like the other two, you can also post your resume for employers to search and find you. Several commenters point out that the three largest job search engines on this list (Monster, CareerBuilder, and HotJobs) all generally carry a lot of the same job postings, so it's more a matter of choosing which one you feel most comfortable with when you're managing your resume and searching for jobs.

    Craigslist

    Craigslist
is best known for free classified ads that have secured Craigslist power users great deals, but the pages of Craigslist also offer a thriving job board. According to commenters, Craigslist can be especially useful for workers looking for regional work. Before you send out another application through Craigslist, be sure to check out these tips for applying for a job on Craigslist.

    Indeed

Job search engine Indeed is a meta-search engine that scours job sites, newspapers, and company career pages for jobs.

Matching jobs are fed to you on a familiar Google-style results page. Indeed isn't a full-service job search site where you post your resume and hope for calls from employers, but if you know what kind of work you're looking for, its impressive meta-search (complete with email alerts and RSS feeds) is worth a look. Note: The majority of votes for Indeed were from first-time commenters (which generally means spam), but Indeed still snagged plenty of legitimate votes from satisfied users.

Now that you've seen the favorites, it's time to vote for the best:

Which Is the Best Online Job Search Site? (Poll Closed)

    Indeed 28.57% (380 votes)

    Craigslist 13.91% (185 votes)

    HotJobs 3.68% (49 votes)

    CareerBuilder 10.08% (134 votes)

    LinkedIn 11.13% (148 votes)

    Monster 20% (266 votes)

    Other 12.63% (168 votes)

The U.S.'s 19,492 municipal governments range in population size from very large (over 300,000) to very small (under 1,000). The vast majority (over 90%) of municipal governments in the U.S. have populations under 25,000.
    http://www.nlc.org/build-skills-and-...n-distribution

There are almost 20% more towns than there are public libraries.
Whether by choice or through financial reality, the percentage of American households without a car has doubled over the past two decades—and is now approaching 1 in 10.
Almost 10% of households don't have a car, and of those who do own a car, a significant % can't drive it because it needs car repairs they can't afford, or needs registration, insurance and property tax payments they can't afford. So if you don't live within walking distance to a Library, it makes using the free service at the Library very difficult, because you either have to pay for public transportation if it's available, pay for cab service or mooch on a relative/friend to take you to the library, or pay someone to take you to the library. When people don't have any jobs, that means they don't have any money, which means they are very limited on what they can do to look for jobs. Employers have to find them. Employers have to recruit, like they used to do.

As Arrest Records Rise, Americans Find Consequences Can Last a Lifetime

Even if Charges Were Dropped, a Lingering Arrest Record Can Ruin Chances of a Job

    By Gary Fields and
    John R. Emshwiller

    Aug. 18, 2014 11:30 p.m. ET

    America has a rap sheet.

Over the past 20 years, authorities have made more than a quarter of a billion arrests, the Federal Bureau of Investigation estimates. As a result, the FBI currently has 77.7 million individuals on file in its master criminal database—or nearly one out of every three American adults.

Between 10,000 and 12,000 new names are added each day.

At the same time, an information explosion has made it easy for anyone to pull up arrest records in an instant. Employers, banks, college admissions officers and landlords, among others, routinely check records online. The information doesn't typically describe what happened next.

Many people who have never faced charges, or have had charges dropped, find that a lingering arrest record can ruin their chance to secure employment, loans and housing. Even in cases of a mistaken arrest, the damaging documents aren't automatically removed. In other instances, arrest information is forwarded to the FBI but not necessarily updated there when a case is thrown out locally. Only half of the records with the FBI have fully up-to-date information.

    ............

Exacerbating the situation are for-profit websites and other background-check businesses that assemble publicly available arrest records, often including mug shots and charges. Many sites charge fees to remove a record, even an outdated or erroneous one. In the past year Google Inc. has changed its search algorithm to de-emphasize many so called "mug-shot" websites, giving them less prominence when someone's name is searched.

On Friday, California Gov. Jerry Brown signed into law a bill making it illegal for websites to charge state residents to have their mug shot arrest photos removed.

In 2013, Indiana legislators approved one of the most extensive criminal record expungement laws in the country. The law was sponsored by a former prosecutor and had a range of conservative Republican backers. One had worked as a mining-company supervisor who frequently had to reject individuals after routine background checks found evidence of an old arrest.

"If we are going to judge people, we need to judge them on who they are now, and not who they were," says Jud McMillin, the bill's chief sponsor.

The "growing obsession with background checking and commercial exploitation of arrest and conviction records makes it all but impossible for someone with a criminal record to leave the past behind," concludes a recent report from the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.

Further analysis by the University of South Carolina team, performed at the request of The Wall Street Journal, suggests that men with arrest records—even absent a formal charge or conviction—go on to earn lower salaries. They are also less likely to own a home compared with people who have never been arrested.

The same holds true for graduation rates and whether a person will live below the poverty line.

For example, more than 95% of subjects without arrests in the survey graduated high school or earned an equivalent diploma. The number falls to 84.4% for those who were arrested and yet not convicted.

Tia Stevens Andersen, the University of South Carolina researcher who performed the analysis, says the results are consistent with what criminologists have found. The data, especially when coupled with other studies, show that an arrest "does have a substantial impact on people's lives," she says. That is in part because "it's now cheap and easy to do a background check."

According to a 2012 survey by the Society for Human Resource Management, 69% of employers conduct criminal background checks on all job applicants. Fewer than that—about 58%—allow candidates to explain any negative results of a check.

Mike Mitternight, the owner and president of Factory Service Agency Inc., a heating and air-conditioning company in Metairie, La., worries that if he turns down a job applicant because of a criminal record, he could be open to a discrimination claim. But hiring the person could leave him open to liability if something goes wrong. "I have to do the background checks and take my chances," says Mr. Mitternight. "It's a lose-lose situation."
So, again, employers are going to have to do far, far more than hire internet head-hunters to post a bunch of phony job ads on the internet for jobs they've already filled with illegal aliens and immigrants to hire American Workers.

To make matters worse, illegals with phony documents can look better to prospective employers than will Americans with an arrest which does not even lead to prosecution, let alone conviction.

If we needed another reason to abandon the delusional War on Drugs, this is it.

Absolutely. I agree with you 110%. Illegal aliens running the drugs in and hauling the money out get hired up before the jobs are even posted for Americans, yet Americans who got caught smoking a joint and arrested for it, will be black-balled by most employers. It's a major civil rights issue for American workers, and an obstacle to their inherent right to work in their nation of citizenship that they need to organize against and remove.
