Immigrants Used Fake SSN to get Road-Building Jobs
(04/24/06 - CHARLOTTE) - An investigation conducted by The Charlotte Observer shows that illegal immigrants have used stolen or falsified Social Security numbers to get jobs with North Carolina roadbuilders.

In today's editions, the newspaper reports that it examined a small sample of road contractors' payroll records from 2005 and found questionable Social Security numbers for one-third of the 85 workers involved.
The Observer then used two private databases and a federal Web site to find workers who had used numbers that belonged to other people or that hadn't been issued at all.

A search turned up suspect numbers for workers for Rea Construction on an Interstate 77 widening project and for a subcontractor of Blythe Construction on Charlotte's Independence Boulevard.

Eleven workers say they made up or bought Social Security numbers on the counterfeit market. Some said they didn't know the rightful owners, and most said they used the number only to get a job
