[b]The Oregon Law Center will showcase its Indigenous Project for farmworkers at an open house from 4 to 6 tonight at the Woodburn Community Center, 491 N Third St. in Woodburn. The program, which features a 5 p.m. speech from State Sen. Peter Courtney, is one of 16 events being held across the state to promote “pro bono legal work.

Recent studies indicate that about 20 percent of Oregon residents qualify for free legal aid, but two of every three who seek it are turned away due to a lack of resources.

Like most places in Oregon, women and minorities make up a disproportionately high number of the 3,000 clients served each year by Marion-Polk Legal Aid Service Inc. The theme for this year’s open houses is “pro bono to call attention to the state bar’s goal of having every attorney in Oregon perform 80 hours of volunteer service annually. About 10 percent of all Oregon lawyers do pro bono work.

Tonight’s events are sponsored by the Campaign for Equal Justice, Legal Aid Services of Oregon, the Oregon State Bar, the Office of the Governor and the Oregon Supreme Court. For information on event locations â€â€
