127th National Guard Leaving for Border Patrol

Members of the Appleton-based 127th Infantry National Guard unit are heading to the U.S.-Mexico border.

The 375 guardsmen leave Saturday for Arizona, and will stay there for three weeks.

The 127th will act as additional eyes and ears for U.S. Customs and the Border Patrol until thousands of newly-hired border agents are fully trained.

The mission is part of Operation Jumpstart, a program President Bush announced a year-and-a-half ago.
