Immigration rights activists rallied Tuesday in Albuquerque and Santa Fe to call for changes in immigration law and protest recent immigration enforcement sweeps.

Federal agents have been rounding up people in homes, workplaces and schools and activists say that now illegal immigrants are living in fear.

“Now, people that come for a better future are being persecuted like they were criminals,” said immigration right activist Consuelo Ochoa de Walker. “That is not America.”

Robert Hector of the conservative Heritage Foundation says the answer to the immigration issue is to “enforce the law passed 20 years ago that you don’t hire illegal aliens. We do not enforce the law. “It’s a joke.”

On a recent trip to the U.S.-Mexico border, President Bush called on Congress to approve a guest worker program that will allow immigrants to eventually become legal citizens.
