New Bedford: Accused immigrant boss can leave U.S.
Accused immigrant boss can leave U.S.
By Patriot Ledger staff
A Pembroke man accused of deliberately hiring illegal aliens at his New Bedford factory won court permission to travel to Panama next month on a medical mission.
Francesco Insolia, 50, owner of Michael Bianco Inc., had been ordered to remain in the United States as a condition of his pre-trial release.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Leo T. Sorokin on Monday gave Insolia permission to go to Panama from June 9 to June 19. He will join volunteer doctors and other medical professionals help residents in the Bocas del Toro region, a rural area in the northeast part of the country, his attorney said in a request to the court.
‘‘Once or twice a year, over the last three years, a team of approximately ten volunteers, including members of Insolia’s family, has traveled to remote locations in Central America’’ to help villagers, attorney Frank Libby said. Several relatives of Insolia are ‘‘licensed healthcare professionals,’’ Libby said.
Insolia made plans last year to join this year’s mission, the lawyer said. He bought a round-trip plane ticket to Panama in December, Libby said.
Prosecutors did not object to the request.
Federal agents raided Insolia’s New Bedford plant on March 6 and took away 361 workers who couldn't prove they were in the country legally.
Insolia and two managers were arrested and charged with conspiracy to hire unauthorized aliens and to induce aliens to live in the United States.
The three have been free on their own recognizance. They are due back in court June 8, the day before Insolia begins his trip.
