Illegal aliens to stand trial

Oct. 8--SOMERSET -- Two farmhands who allegedly stole an SUV from a Somerset County farm and then crashed it into a tree were ordered to stand trial on theft and related charges.

Feliciano Alvarez, 22, and Eleazer Alvarez, 21, who authorities described as illegal aliens, were ordered Tuesday to stand trial following a preliminary hearing before District Judge Arthur Cook of Somerset.

The two men allegedly stole a 1996 Jeep Cherokee from Hillegass Farm along Glades Pike on Aug. 24 and then drove to Berlin to buy beer and pizza, state police in Somerset said.

They lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a tree along MacDonaldton Road in Brothersvalley Township.

Berlin police and state troopers caught the men at Coalfield's Mini-Market on Main Street in Berlin, where they had walked to call for a ride back to the farm.

Troopers said the language barrier made it difficult to communicate with the men, who were later determined to be illegal aliens from Mexico.

Federal immigration officials are expected to take custody of the men, authorities said.

Headed back to the farm huh. That farm owner should be investigated. It's likely he allows IAs to use his vehicles with the stipulation that "if anything happens I'll say you stole it."
