ESCONDIDO ---- Police arrested nine people and impounded 29 vehicles at a Saturday driver's license and sobriety checkpoint, an Escondido police lieutenant said.

Between 6 p.m. and midnight, police screened 887 of the 1,743 vehicles that entered the checkpoint on Valley Parkway at Juniper Street, Lt. Tom Albergo said.

Police arrested five suspected drunken drivers and three people for drug possession, Albergo said.

One man, who could not provide identification initially, was determined to have been previously ordered out of the country by an immigration judge after a conviction for spousal abuse, Albergo said. He was turned over to federal immigration agents.

Officers impounded 29 vehicles, Albergo said. Twenty-seven drivers had no driver's license, eight had a suspended license and 12 had no car insurance, he said.

Police also issued 47 citations and reinstalled seven child restraint seats for parents, Albergo said.
