An Allentown man was repeatedly slashed with a broken bottle early Sunday in an attack by two men who police later identified as illegal immigrants, police said.

Efrain Maldonado, 19, of Allentown was cut on his left forearm and upper arm, chest and upper back by Nelson Velasquez, 23, no address, police Capt. Daryl Hendricks said.

Police said Velasquez and Miguel A. Nolasco, 31, also no address, confronted Maldonado shortly after 1:30 a.m. at 916 Chew St. Police did not say what the confrontation was over.

Velasquez broke the top off a beer bottle and began to slash Maldonado while Nolasco began punching him, police said.

Police arrived to find Maldonado outside bleeding and witnesses gave them an account of the attack. Hendricks did not know where Maldonado was treated.

Police said they spotted Velasquez on a second-floor roof, ordered him down and arrested him. They found Nolasco nearby shortly afterward.

Both were charged with aggravated assault, simple assault and reckless endangerment. Both were expected to be arraigned Sunday night and sent to Lehigh County Prison. Both are believed to be from Honduras, Hendricks said.
