FRANKLIN COUNTY -- The case of an alleged illegal immigrant charged with attempted rape will proceed into the Franklin County court system.
Magisterial District Judge Larry Pentz determined during a preliminary hearing Tuesday that there is enough evidence for the charges against Genaro Renderos-Abrego, 31, to stand.

His arraignment is slated for June 1. He remains in Franklin County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bail.

The alleged victim testified tearfully, describing with apparent difficulty how she fell asleep next to her infant and woke up with Renderos-Abrego on top of her. She was asked if he was intoxicated when the incident happened in the early morning of April 9.

"He doesn't drink," the woman said. "He's just naturally crazy."

Renderos-Abrego appeared at the hearing shackled at his ankles and wearing an orange jumpsuit. A woman sat next to him, translating everything that was said into Spanish. He was represented by public defender Raymond Rockwell.

According to charging documents, Renderos-Abrego was born in El Salvador. Police said it was determined he is an illegal immigrant shortly after his arrest on the attempted rape charges.

Assistant District Attorney Lauren Sulcove withdrew a previously filed charge of making terroristic threats because it stemmed from an alleged incident that took place on a different date from the alleged attempted rape.

The remaining charges of attempted rape, attempted sexual assault, criminal mischief and providing false identification to police were all bound over for trial.
