Reading man indicted on drug, gun charges

A federal grand jury on Wednesday indicted an illegal Haitian immigrant living in Reading on charges that he had a gun and drugs.

The grand jury in U.S. District Court in Philadelphia charged Jean Joseph of the 600 block of North Fifth Street with distributing crack cocaine and two counts each of possessing crack cocaine and gun charges.

The indictment follow a Jan. 12 raid at Joseph's apartment by Berks County detectives.

Detectives said that they got a search warrant for the residence after undercover agents bought drugs from Joseph. He had $106, 50 packets of crack cocaine and a loaded .40 caliber handgun when he was arrested, detectives said.

The investigation was handled by the district attorney's drug task force, federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents from the Department of Homeland Security.

Joseph remains in Berks County Prison awaiting further court action. He has been in the prison since his arrest.
