Californians health plan hits a snag
Californians health plan hits a snag
Poll finds 40 percent object to coverage for kids of illegal immigrants

SACRAMENTO — Californians soundly approve of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's proposed "universal" health care plan, even if it means a tax increase, but are not as supportive of including the children of illegal immigrants, according to a poll released Wednesday.
Schwarzenegger's proposal would require all Californians to have health insurance, with costs shared by employers, health care providers and individuals.
A Public Policy Institute of California survey found a majority of Californians — regardless of whether they are Democrats, Republicans or independents — support the governor's plan.
Some 65 percent of likely voters support the Republican governor's proposal, which will be weighed together with plans by the Legislature's dominant Democrats.
The independent, Bay Area-based institute found Californians are even more enthusiastic about the aspect of the governor's proposal thatguarantees medical coverage for children in low-income families.
About 79 percent of Californians and 72 percent of likely voters say they favor the plan.
"But support for this proposal drops substantially when residents are asked about providing medical coverage to lower-income children" who might be in illegal immigrant families, poll director Mark Baldassare wrote in the survey.
The poll found 56 percent of residents still approve under that scenario, but 40 percent are opposed.

immigrants' children exceeds support, with 50 percent against it and 46 percent in favor.
Nearly all Latinos support the proposal, with 86 percent in favor and 12 percent opposed. Whites oppose it 54 percent to 41 percent.
In general, Californians are giving Schwarzenegger and President Bush low marks on the health care system, plagued by growing costs and shrinking availability.
Majorities of residents said they believe federal and state governments are spending too little on health care.
Californians prefer universal health care insurance to the current system, in which most people are covered through their employer or purchase coverage privately.
"And they are willing to ante up to get it," Baldassare said.
Six out of 10 adults, or 63 percent — and 59 percent of likely voters — say they favor a universal system, even if it means raising taxes.
The telephone survey of 2,014 California adults was conducted Jan. 11 to Jan. 18 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points. For the 1,180 likely voters, the margin of error is 3 percentage points.

I worked in hospitals for over 30 years.
The abuse of the system is horrendous.
Hospitals can not survive by serving only illegals,
and that is what is happening.
ER abuse has gone over the top. Most Americans
know that emergency is EMERGENCY.
I have seen and it drives me crazy...illegals' children
being tested for GROWTH delay and HEARING problems.
Are you kidding me....they are shorter than Americans and
HEY, if they do not speak English and they do not in their homes,
they act like they can not hear at school. HELLO, because they are not taught to learn English.
All day long ....the children being adopted from China and other
Asian countries also. All this comes out of our pockets folks and
the hospitals are not being reimbursed.
And this goes down to the salaries that are paid to hospital staff.
They DO NOT get raises like other businesses. Maybe a 2 per cent.
Hey, that goes real far. Hospitals cap employees...if you transfer or move
to another hospital...they will tell you, even IF you have been in the business for 20,30 years....they will only start at what a person who has
been in the business for only 5 years makes.
And you wonder why hospitals are short staffed.....NOT>
Gross injustice of the system....gross.

Well, of course nearly all Latinos support it but the voters do not. This state needs some serious house cleaning before we should consider such a stupid socialistic program.
