Police and Protesters Square Off at Leimert Park

Police and Protesters Square Off at Leimert Park
    June 23, 2007, 4:17 PM PDT

Police and Protesters Square Off at Leimert Park A line of Los Angeles Police officers on Crenshaw Boulevard stood between a coalition of Minutemen and black activists, and a larger group of pro-immigrant marchers in Leimert Park today.

Officers, some in riot gear, some in shorts and on bicycles, lined the usually-busy boulevard street. At 3:50 p.m., LAPD officials declared the anti- immigrant rally to be an illegal assemble, as its parade permit had expired, and a short time later arrested activist anti-immigration activist Ted Hayes.

LAPD brass earlier had declared a tactical alert to muster enough officers to keep the two sides apart. And police, mindful of the May Day melee at MacArthur Park, carefully told reporters that it was setting up an observation zone at the southern side of the park.

Led by longtime homeless advocate Ted Hayes, an unusual coalition of white Minutemen activists and a small number of blacks demanding reparations for slavery had planned an 11 a.m. march to Leimert Park, and daylong rally.

But a racially-mixed pro-immigrants crowd of more than 400 persons milled about Leimert Park, a triangular spot of green known as the cultural center of black Los Angeles. They carried pro-immigration-rights signs, and vowed to prevent the others from marching into the park.

Inside the park, many black residents said they were aghast at what they said was the use of their community for the anti-immigration effort.

"Being a kind of multicultural person, I realized they have an urgency to get black folk on their side, and I knew it was wrong," said Ahzul Jimenez, 24, of Los Angeles.

Another pro-immigration protestor in the park, Terrance Hayes, said that as a black man he feels "everybody has a right to be here in this country."

But on the other side of the police lines, Hayes waved a banner decrying "the black American slave holocaust" and said it was a "travesty" that his group could not exercise its parade permit to rally in the park.

"As of this day, the city of Los Angeles in a state of chaos," Hayes said. He vowed to be arrested to protect his rights, and a few minutes after saying that was taken into custody.

Hayes had chosen the park, an area known as the cultural center of the black community of Los Angeles, for a rally he called "Choose Black America - Not Amnesty - Not Illegal Immigration."

Lauren Price, a 74-year-old Long Beach resident who had arrived with the Minutemen, carried an American flag, anti-immigration sign, and scoffed at those who said residents should all get along.

"We all can't get along because they are trying to take everything from us," she said.

Hayes has a parade permit, approved by the Police Commission, to use the park. But a large group of pro-immigration persons heard about the rally, and are counterprotesting by blocking access to the small triangle of green space.

Although the news reporter estimated more than 500 people were protesting, LAPD spokeswoman Mary Grady said police count 150 on each side.

News media are being told to report to an intersection at the south corner of the park "should the event be declared to be an unlawful assembly," said Grady.

A citywide tactical alert was called at about 1:30 p.m., meaning officers completing their shifts are being kept on overtime in case additional officers are needed.

Without going into details, the rallies may be "a little sideways," said police spokesperson Norma Eisenman. Hayes started his rally at 11 a.m. and expected to conclude it at 5 p.m., Eisenman said.

"The rallies at this point got to be a partly-separated stalemate,"

Grady said, "and no one is able to go into the park."

In California, every time anti-illegal alien protestors try to hold a rally the racist latino element appears and threatens the rally with the use of force, ugly obscenities and anything else they can do to prevent free speech. I am truly amazed that a violent free-for-all hasn't erupted. This may be the way they conduct business in Mexico, but it doesn't fit too well here in the states. At the bottom of this is the fact that our elected officials have pussyfooted around, always being politically correct, and this has served to embolden the illegals and they now believe they can get away with anything.

Police and Protesters Square Off at Leimert Park
    June 23, 2007, 8:08 PM PDT

Police and Protesters Square Off at Leimert Park Los Angeles police were a picture of restraint today as they kept screaming pro- and anti-immigration activists apart at Leimert Park and maintained order without another "May Day melee" breaking out.

The head of the anti-immigration group and about four others were arrested when they were denied access to the park by pro-immigration protesters and the police, but no injuries were reported.

Despite protesters who chanted "police are pigs" and other incitements, officers did not use force to disperse the crowd, as they did during a May Day pro-immigration rally at MacArthur Park that drew worldwide condemnation.

The anti-immigration group was led by longtime homeless advocate Ted Hayes, who had gotten a permit to march down Crenshaw Boulevard and rally in the park starting at 11 a.m. He was joined by a couple hundred anti-immigration and mostly white Minutemen members and a few blacks demanding reparations for slavery.

When pro-immigration activists heard about the march, they assembled about 400 people of various races who milled about the park carrying pro- immigration signs and blocking the other group from entering.

At 1:30 p.m., the LAPD declared a tactical alert, meaning all officers were to remain on duty in case they were needed, and a line of officers, some in riot gear and some in shorts and on bicycles, made a line down Crenshaw to keep the two groups apart. Mindful of the May Day melee, they also set up observation zone for the media at the south side of the park.

At 3:50 p.m., LAPD officials declared the anti-immigrant rally to be an illegal assembly because the parade permit had expired.

"In the balancing act that we got into here was the issue of allowing access to the park," LAPD Deputy Chief Mike Hillman told ABC7. "Mr. Hayes' group had a permit to go into the park. The park was occupied by, literally, children between 5 and 12 years of age and their parents, plus about 250 to 300 individuals that were community members who obviously took issue with Mr. Hayes being here in their community, so they blocked access to the park."

Rather than leave, Hayes arranged with the police to be arrested.

"I went to the trouble to get the permit to have this park right here so that we can express our First Amendment right to talk about how our civil rights are being hijacked by citizens from foreign countries illegally," he told ABC7 shortly before being taken into custody.

Inside the park, some black residents said they were aghast at what they said was the use of their community for the anti-immigration effort.

"Being a kind of multicultural person, I realized they have an urgency to get black folk on their side, and I knew it was wrong," said Ahzul Jimenez, 24, of Los Angeles.

Another pro-immigration protestor, Terrance Hayes, no relation to Ted Hayes, said that as a black man he feels "everybody has a right to be here in this country."

But on the other side of the police lines, Ted Hayes waved a banner decrying "the black American slave holocaust" and said it was a "travesty" that his group could not exercise its parade permit to rally in the park.

"As of this day, the city of Los Angeles in a state of chaos," Hayes said. He vowed to be arrested to protect his rights, and a few minutes after saying that was taken into custody.

Hayes had chosen the park, which is considered the cultural center of the black community of Los Angeles, for a rally he called "Choose Black America -- Not Amnesty -- Not Illegal Immigration."

Lauren Price, a 74-year-old Long Beach resident who had arrived with the Minutemen, carried an American flag and an anti-immigration sign and scoffed at those who said everyone should just get along.

"We all can't get along because they are trying to take everything from us," she said.

Although Hayes had a permit to enter the park, "government interests far outweighed the permit," Hillman said, noting that the clashing protesters could have put children in the park at risk.

Hayes and a few other anti-immigration protesters were arrested because "they opted to cross the line after they were told by an incident commander to stay behind the line," he said. "We surgically arrested them for failure to obey a lawful direction of a peace officer."

Some people dressed in camouflage baited the police, but officers did not break ranks or respond.

The identities of the four others who were arrested was not immediately known.

Asked if police policy had changed since the May Day melee at MacArthur Park, Hillman said police have always tried "to facilitate the First Amendment rights of everyone."

But civil rights leader Najee Ali, who supported the pro-immigration ralliers, commended the department's handling of crowd control, and said he noticed a positive change different from what was seen at MacArthur Park.

He said a "mini-riot" would have erupted if police had allowed Ted Hayes' group to enter the park, where counter-protesters had mobilized.

"The way they handled hundreds of protesters, they were able to keep the peace by not enforcing the legal permit," Ali said.

By late afternoon, both sides had dispersed with no further incidents.

The police may be tested again tomorrow when more than 15,000 people are expected to take to the streets of Hollywood to demand full legalization for illegal immigrants, days before Tuesday's anticipated Senate debate on a controversial immigration reform bill backed by President Bush.

Participants of the June 24th "Full Rights For Immigrants March and Rally" will begin assembling at Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street around 10 a.m. The march to the front of the Kodak Theatre, between Highland Avenue and Orange Drive, will begin at noon and is expected to last about an hour, with a rally scheduled for early afternoon.

There was no immediate word on whether anti-immigration activists planned to hold counter-protests.

How come you don't see this on the news? I saw about 2 seconds of it on CNN Lou Dobb. Had it been the other way around it would have made all the big 3 stations and the rest of the traitor stations. I am so mad about this bill.
