The City of Pampa and the Pampa Police Department said 16 undocumented immigrants were taken into custody early Friday and turned over to Border Patrol.

The City of Pampa announced the incident at approximately 2 p.m. Friday, posting on Facebook that a Pampa Police Officer attempted to stop a 2005 Chrysler Town & Country van on a speeding violation. The van initially pulled over in the 900 block of West Alcock Street. As the officer approached the driver’s side door, the vehicle pulled away and turned south onto North Hobart Street.

After the vehicle turned onto Hobart, it came to a stop and multiple people began exiting the van and running from the scene. The officer who made the initial stop was able to detain two people still inside the van.

Other officers called to the area and were able to locate another 14 subjects, including a 16-year-old juvenile.

After more investigation, it was determined that all 16 subjects had entered the United States illegally, and U.S. Border Patrol was called in. Border Patrol has since taken custody of all 16 subjects.

The Pampa Police Department believes that there are still two suspects at large. The driver of the van has not been identified.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
