    Attacks Ravage Mexican Industry

TERROR | 60% of steel production gets shut down

    September 12, 2007
    BY LISA J. ADAMS

MEXICO CITY -- More than 60 percent of Mexico's steel production was halted and two major auto plants, including Volkswagen's only manufacturing facility in North America, shut down Tuesday after explosions claimed by a leftist group cut natural gas supplies.
Petroleos Mexicanos said the attacks on its oil and natural gas pipelines would cause hundreds of millions of dollars in production losses for the state-owned oil company and affect 10 states.

Private-sector groups told Mexican news media that the attacks and subsequent precautionary shutdowns would cost businesses close to $90 million.

The six explosions Monday caused no direct injuries, but both industry and national-security experts say the small leftist group claiming responsibility has proved it is a force to be reckoned with.

''The sophistication required to plan, coordinate and execute these explosions shows that the perpetrators have the technical capability of turning these episodes into either terrorist attacks or industrial sabotage,'' said George Baker, a Houston-based energy analyst.

The Revolutionary People's Army, or EPR, a secretive Marxist group that killed dozens of police and soldiers during attacks in the late 1990s, claimed responsibility.

The organization wants the release of two group members missing since May.

You mean aid to the Mexican ruling classes and the government right? Because no one wants to help the Mexican people -- not even their own government. It's easier to help Mexico oppress its people than to actually help them.

I think it's great that some of the Mexican people are actually doing something. A national revolution in Mexico would probably be better since it's
pretty obvious Mexican politicians and the ruling class have no intentions of helping out their own people (they would much rather export their problems to the US and get remittances in return).

I MADE A MISTAKE. I WENT TO LOOK FOR MORE INFO. ACTUALLY HERSHEY DID NOT HAVE TO SHUT DOWN BECAUSE OF THE PIPELINE ATTACK IN MEXICO. HERSHEY WAS SPECIFICALLY ATTACKED.

Sabotage blamed for Pemex pipeline explosions in Mexico
Posted Sep 10th 2007 1:33PM by Michael Fowlkes
Filed under: International markets, Bad news, Consumer experience, Hershey Co (HSY), Mexico, Politics, Oil

Mexico announced today that Petroleos Mexicanos, also known as Pemex, was the victim of several explosions that affected at least five different pipelines in the country.

Pemex, the Mexican state oil monopoly, has stated that today's attacks were deliberate in nature, and forced the evacuation of around 12,000 people. Luckily, as of now there are no reported deaths resulting from today's attacks.

This is not the first time this summer that Pemex has been attacked. In July it was reported that a leftist guerrilla group (the Popular Revolutionary Army) attacked not only another major Pemex pipeline, but also carried out attacks on at least a dozen other major companies. The companies attacked included big names such as Honda Motor Co. (NYSE: HMC), Kellogg Co. (NYSE: K) and Hershey Co. (NYSE: HSY).

Following the attacks earlier this summer, the Mexican government increased security at "strategic installations" around the country, but that did not stop the wave of violence today.

According to a report on Bloomberg, it appears as though the five pipelines were hit by six different explosions, and that four of these explosions resulted in fires, which have since been put under control.

There are still no estimates as to the effect that today's attacks will have on the country's energy supplies, but the attack in July reportedly resulted in more than 100 companies having to cut or suspend production due to lack of gas.
