Federal officials have named a replacement for Roberto Medina, the top immigration enforcer in Arizona, who has come under attack from Gov. Janet Napolitano and others for refusing to cooperate in the battle against illegal immigration.
Alonzo R. Peña, currently the special agent in charge of Immigration and Custom Enforcement investigations in San Antonio, is set to start in Phoenix on Oct. 16.
Peña, a Texan, is a veteran federal agent credited with spearheading a task force to combat rising violence in Laredo spilling over from a bloody turf war between drug cartels across the border in Nuevo Laredo.
Napolitano, along with Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, complained that Medina refused to cooperate on several efforts to combat human smuggling organizations.
