Pearce Calls Governor's Veto 'Slap in the Face of Voters'
Pearce Calls Governor's Veto 'Slap in the Face of Voters'
May 9th, 2007 @ 8:03am by Doug Ramsey/KTAR
Governor Napolitano has vetoed a bill which would have stopped government from accepting Mexican consular IDs.
Lawmaker Russell Pearce says he's disappointed, but not surprised.
"Well, she certainly hasn't changed her colors. This governor is consistenting vetoing any bill of any substance to combat illegal aliens in the state of Arizona," says Pearce.
He says the governor is defying the will of the voters. "When they passed Prop. 200, when they passed Prop. 300 they said no free stuff to people in this country illegally. That card facilitates that. It's a direct slap in the face of the voters of the state of Arizona."
In her veto letter, Napolitano says the cards may be the only way to identify foreigners stopped by law enforcement.
Pearce says the cards are not reliable. "If you're in the country legally, you get an Arizona drivers license, an Arizona ID card, you have a Visa. You have legitimate paperwork. The only purpose for a matricula, a consular card, is to benefit illegal aliens. It's tantamount to amnesty."
