MLB Players Condemn Arizona Immigration Law, Threaten 2011 All-Star Game Boycott

MLB players condemn Arizona Immigration Law, Threaten 2011 All-Star Game Boycott

Arizona’s controversial new immigration law was a major topic of conversation in the sports world earlier this week, with several prominent athletes speaking out against the statute during Major League Baseball’s All-Star game festivities.

National League pitching star Yovani Gallardo, a Mexican native, told reporters on Monday that he will boycott next year’s mid-summer classic if the game remains in Arizona.

Meanwhile, Detroit Tigers relief pitcher Jose Valverde—who was born in the Dominican Republic—told the Arizona Republic that the law is "the stupidest thing you can ever have."

"Nothing against Americans, but us Latinos have contributed so much to this country," he added "We get our hands dirty and do the work gringos don’t want to do. We’re the ones out there cleaning the streets. Americans don’t want to do that stuff."

However, not all members of the MLB community are condemning the new law, which is scheduled to go into effect on July 29.

St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said he supports the measure, which would give Arizona law enforcement the right to ask for identification from those who they "reasonably suspect" of being an illegal alien.

"I’m actually a supporter of what Arizona’s doing," he said, quoted by Fox News. "The national government doesn’t fix your problem, and you’ve got a problem, they’ve got to take care of it themselves."

MLB Commissioner Bud Selig has yet to comment on the law or the status of next year’s All-Star game, which is still scheduled to be played in Arizona.

If MLB pulls the game out of Arizona they have a much bigger problem on their hands. Firstly, fans don't want to see a sport become politicized and the sport will suffer. Second, the MLB owners should be wise enough to know that American Citizens will take retribution in the form of boycott on the teams that decide to boycott due to Arizona's sovereign attempt to protect itself. It's a loser all day long for MLB. They need to stay away from this like the plague!

    Did he

    Did he call us GRINGOS?

Meanwhile, Detroit Tigers relief pitcher Jose Valverde—who was born in the Dominican Republic—told the Arizona Republic that the law is "the stupidest thing you can ever have."

Nobody is outraged by that? I find it very offensive and DEMAND an apology from this clown.

These arrogant players, first of all, assume they're going to be playing in the All Star game.

Doing jobs Americans won't do my cute patoot!! A very nice American citizen cleans the dog poop out of my yard twice a week - with a smile and a treat for each of my dogs. Quite a contrast to the arrogant Hispanics I see every day.

Hey Yovani and Jose, let me remind you to ingrates that you are BOTH guests of the USA. If you don't like our laws they carry your butts back to Mexico and The Dominican Republic. You too fools have made a lot of money off the hospitality of this country but that can all end when American choose to turn their backs on an American sport.

Bud Selig, baseball is already having a hard time selling seats, especially in these tough economic time. This can easily be one of the first things American end if you can't grow a backbone and do what is right for America, not Mexico/LaRaza.

I agree! If Selig can't find in himself to discipline these players for their racist remarks and tell LaRaza where to go then it's time America turn our backs on the MLB. We are fed up here in Houston for paying for a stadium so these millionaires can make money.

OK thats it for me and to hell with the MLB !! Yes I am outraged and will spread the word like wildfire.

The MLB allowed these unappreciative Foreigner ingrates call us all "Gringos" plus give us a tongue lashing just because we want our Immigration laws upheld and the MLB has never denounced their behavior .

I love baseball but not enough to allow Foreign Nationals to disrespect our citizens, our laws and our country !!

Either the MLB FIRES their azzes or will lose the support of the Majority of USA Citizens once this gets spread thru email distribution.
