Pentagon Says DOD Could Fund Border Projects, After Trump Suggests Military Could Build the Wall

    December 12, 2018

    [

“To date, there is no plan to build sections of the wall. However, Congress has provided options under Title 10 U.S. Code that could permit the Department of Defense to fund border barrier projects, such as in support of counter drug operations or national emergencies,” Pentagon spokesman Army Lt. Col. Jamie Davis said.

The Pentagon statement came after President Trump on Tuesday morning said the military could build remaining sections of a border wall.

“People do not yet realize how much of the Wall, including really effective renovation, has already been built. If the Democrats do not give us the votes to secure our Country, the Military will build the remaining sections of the Wall. They know how important it is!” he tweeted Tuesday.

Trump later on Tuesday called the border crisis a “national emergency” during a meeting with incoming House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (CA) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (NY), and evoked drug control.

“We’re going to see. Look, we have to have the wall. This isn’t a question; this is a national emergency. Drugs are pouring into our country. People with tremendous medical difficulty and medical problems are pouring in, and in many — in many cases, it’s contagious. They’re pouring into our country. We have to have border security. We have to have a wall as part of border security,” he said.

Rep. Adam Smith (D-WA), the incoming chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, told reporters Tuesday that lawmakers on both sides of the aisle would try to stop Trump from using the military to build the wall, according to the Washington Examiner.

Smith doesn’t think there is wall funding in Trump’s $750B defense budget top line, but if so lawmakers would ‘freak out’ and move to stop it.

However, Sen. James Inhofe (R-OK), chairman of the Armed Services Committee, left open the possibility of having the military build the wall, according to Bloomberg:

.@JimInhofe says he doesn’t expect the U.S. military to build the border wall. Much will also depend on how the president makes the request; any projects under mil construction have to be authorized but could be asked differently. Inhofe has his own border bill as alternative

    — Roxana Tiron (@rtiron) December 11, 2018

Inhofe, however, has been advocating for his own border funding bill.

In an exclusive interview with Breitbart News last week, Inhofe said his bill would fully fund the border wall by cutting off illegal aliens’ access to welfare benefits and tax credits.

The bill would stipulate that only Americans or legal immigrants with work-authorized Social Security numbers can claim child tax credits, earned income tax credits, and other tax credits.

DO IT!! YES!!!! In fact put Marines on the Border in front of Border Patrol. Border Patrol has no clue how to defend or guard our border. They just stand there looking helpful and arrest them. We want a force that keeps them out, not one that "processes" them. We want scary people, in war paint, carrying machetes or huge knives, who jump out of the bushes with twigs and tree limbs all over them and rush these illegal aliens screaming GET OUT OR I'LL CUT YOU TO PIECES!! You know, like a good ... special forces team. Marines can do that. They've got that black stuff they rub on their faces. You know what I'm talking about, I see in movies, you know like .... RAMBO!!!! We need 30,000 RAMBOS ON THE BORDER NOW!!!

Trump's a liar. Some fencing has been renovated and some previously funded and planned fencing has been put up (not much). However, their hasn't been two inches of Trump's border wall put in place or funded! Funding for Trump's border wall to date has been nada, none, zilch, zero!

Your case for the promised border wall would be stronger if you would just be honest, Mr. President. Don't tell the American public some of your wall has been built when it hasn't and don't tell us you received $1.6 billion funding for your border wall when you haven't! Cut all the B.S. and tell the American public the truth without attempting to hype yourself up with lies. You're undermining yourself, Mr. President!

They built the Alaska Highway and they CAN build the wall!

Get the military bulldozers and tanks down there now!

No turning yourself in to BP anymore!

Catch and deport them on the spot!

Load up barges in San Diego and let the Navy and Coast Guard ship them home!

Put the Navy and Coast Guard watercraft on the Rio Grande!

Stop the drug trafficking, the human trafficking AND terrorists coming in!

Automatic catch and deport! Including their UAC's!

One serious question----Why wasn't this started as soon as Trump took office, instead of all the threatened shut downs, all the blaming the D's---all the broken promises?

I also believe the military can and should build the wall, however I will only believe it when I see it going up. I have learned to believe not one word that comes from Trump's mouth. This statement came from the Pentagon, and recently can't believe much they say either, not after all the back and forth with military on the border.

Title 10 law provides DOD certain options that could permit use of its funds to build border barriers to support counter drug operations and national emergencies. Trump used the caravans and the opioid crisis including illegal fentanyl imports to declare national emergencies. So it was Trump's decision to declare a national emergency back in October that opens the door now for the military to build the wall, and he stated yesterday that if there's a shutdown because Congress won't give him the money or he can't get it from the military, then he'll own the shutdown. He raised the DOD budget a few days ago from their request of $733 to $750 billion "top-line", which gives him $17 billion for the wall if he needs it without impacting the DOD budget if Congress won't give him the money. Then he starts telling the country that's what he wants to do. Then he meets with Nancy and Chuck on live Tee Vee. Then, the Pentagon announces they can legally do it. Trump works hard at staying ahead of the curve and knows how to create leverage better than anyone I've ever seen.

Will it be the concrete wall? No, I really don't think so. During the campaign it was already shifting from the masonry wall that Trump wanted to something more akin to what Border Patrol wanted, so I think it will be that beautiful 30 foot American-made Steel Bollard Fencing that Border Patrol prefers with the roads they want. Military builds great roads. I also think he's going to keep active military on the border for the indefinite future.

Will it stop it all? Probably not. Will it stop a lot of it? Oh sure, it'll stop a lot of it. And the bollard fencing is easy on the environment and more efficient in dealing with storm drainage issues.

Plus that gives Trump the option either way of saying no to any type of amnesty in exchange for wall funding, assuming he still wants to say no to any type of amnesty.

If Trump changed his mind about the 30 foot concrete and rebar wall, than why did the prototypes he had built look like the 30 foot concrete walls he promised during his campaign? He doesn't get to campaign on one thing to get our votes and then change his mind if he expects to keep our confidence. What's the difference between a flip-flop and a lie?

I noticed you said the Pentagon says some of it's funds can be used to build border barriers. Interesting that you would use the word barrier instead of wall. Barriers, while used to impede or block passage can be temporary in nature. They can also be as simple as a waist high chain-link fence. Trump promised during his campaign that he would build an impenetrable wall made of concrete that he would reinforce with rebar. That's the wall we were promised and that's a promise many of us expect him to keep!

Now the Trump administration seems to have shifted goalposts, saying any new updates, maintenance work, or replacements of existing barriers qualify as part of "Trump's wall." Well, we all know that is a lie. The replacement bollard fencing is fencing, not a wall.

You can't decide to call your cat a dog and expect him to defend your home just because you decided to call him something he is not. Well, same thing goes for the bollard fencing. You can't call the fencing a wall and expect it to do the same thing as what you used to describe as a big beautiful rebar reinforced concrete wall. The Trump administration can attempt to re-brand the fencing as a wall, but those of us with half a brain know better and won't be fooled!

He hadn't made up his mind for sure during the campaign but told us straight up he might. I think he wanted to see the prototypes and determine if they could pass all the tests. They all failed. So why move forward with them? He canned them. He either needs a new design or go with the new and improved bollard fencing, which personally I like much better.

But you keep up your good work, MW. You're doing a great job for whatever you're trying to accomplish.

What am I trying to accomplish? All I'm interested in is the truth. No need to lob veiled personal insults.
