During an interview with Fox News on Tuesday morning, Texas Governor Rick Perry accused presidential rival Mitt Romney, former governor of Massachusetts, of being a “magnet” for undocumented immigrants.

“I think I went after Romney rather stringently when we were in the debates,” Perry explained, giving reason why he’s been focusing his advertising against former Senator Rick Santorum (R-PA) instead of Romney. “Whether it was on his hiring of illegal immigrants and being part of the problem that we’ve got, being the magnet for those types of individuals who would come across our borders and looking for work. Whether it’s his flip-flops on everything from his position on life or whether it’s on gay marriage, which he supported — all of those are issues we went after him on.”

He went on to describe “the differences between me and Romney” as being “legendary,” which is why his campaign has mostly focused on advertisements that attack other candidates.

Perry also said that he believes victory in Iowa is close at hand, although the latest polls show him trailing the front-runners in fifth place with just 11 percent of likely Republican voters indicating their support for him.

Various polls in recent weeks have concluded that Romney leads the field by about 2 percent when the sample group is made up of just Republicans, but Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) runs away with the win by a much wider margin in surveys that factor in non-Republicans, who may or may not participate in the caucuses.

Oh that is a ridiculous statement by Perry. Romney didn't know they were illegal aliens and when he found out, he required the contractor lay them off and hire legal workers. Then when the contractor violated that about a year later and hired illegals again, Romney fired the contractor. That's why we need E-verify and Romney supports that legislation.
