PETA objects to felons processing poultry
    by The Associated Press

STILLMORE, Ga. - An animal protection organization has raised objections to convicted felons being used to process chickens at a south Georgia poultry plant whose workforce was decimated by a crackdown on illegal immigrants working there.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals said Wednesday that it was concerned that criminals with violent pasts could be among the workers being bused from a probation center.

PETA said it wanted to point out ``that chicken slaughterhouses are notorious for animal abuse and that staffing the plant with violent criminals is begging for violations of Georgia's cruelty-to-animals laws.''

Federal immigration officials began visiting Crider Poulty plant in Stillmore in May, estimating that about 700 workers were using false identification. Many employees were confronted and fired. Some left on their own.

Over Labor Day, federal agents raided the plant and rounded up more than 120 illegal immigrants working at Crider or living in surrounding counties. That left the plant with a huge labor gap.

In late November, Crider officials said the plant was busing in felons on probation and homeless men to fill the jobs. About 40 convicted felons from the Macon Diversion Center and 16 men from the Garden City Rescue Mission in Augusta had worked in the plant, they said.

Crider President David Purtle said that left the plant operating at 450 employees, less than half of the 1,000 workers there before the immigration crackdown.

PETA said in a news release that it had written the superintendent of the Macon Diversion Center, urging him to halt the program.

The organization said PETA had documented cruelty in poultry slaughterhouses by normal workforces, including workers tearing off the heads of live birds, throwing live chickens in scalding water, and using the birds as punching bags.

In its letter, PETA said it also asked Emanuel County Sheriff J. Tyson Stephens, District Attorney Steve Askew, and state Agriculture Commissioner Tommy Irvin to conduct unannounced inspections at the plant, at the least.

``Placing animals in the care of convicts with violent histories is like putting children in the care of child molesters,'' PETA vice president Bruce Friedrich said.

Really? Statements like this on the Internet usually contain some reference to Hitler? And allowing animals to be cared for by those from a culture that relishes in fighting animals to the death was better? We heard no complaints. Give us a little time Bruce and we'll try to free up millions of social workers to do these jobs.

If these prisoners are working and the money is going directly towards paying the cost of their incarceration, then what is the big deal. I think its a good idea to give the homeless the jobs if they can do it.

The people being hired are from a halfway program. They are Americans that have done wrong and now just want a life. Somehow alien invaders working by committing felony identity theft are preferred over persons that may have been jailed for the same offense or writing worthless checks. Perhaps there are some cruel people among them. However, I still remember the illegal alien and how he treated his puppy. Chickens are likely not safe either.

I'm fed up with the whining that goes on in our Country...it's so bad, that one can't say or do much of anything anymore!

I don't see felons doing more than illegals to a chicken. At least we know the felons see Dr.'s and I've never heard whether these illegals are given medical exams or not!

There are alot of legal people out there that have made mistakes in life and want to change. This is a chance for some of them and they deserve it more than an illegal with a sob story. Some of those who deserve second chances have families and need the job. We get some of them at the Police Athletic League who are there to clean the facility or help in the concession stand and once you meet some of them you would never know of their past as they are just like the rest of us and very hardworking.

PETA is just as worthless as the ACLU and these other groups.
Good definition of their acronym John!

What are they afraid of? the animal's rights are being violated in some way by the inmates?

And what is so bad about having the homeless being employed?
I always thought its better for people to have a job and paying taxes, than not having a job and living off the government.

HEY PETA FREAKS, IF YOU'RE SO WORRIED ABOUT THE ANIMALS, HOW ABOUT SPEAKING OUT AGAINST THE SNAKES, BIRDS, AND OTHER DESERT ANIMALS DYING DAILY AT THE HAND OF ILLEGALS. NOT TO MENTION THE COWS AND OTHER FARM ANIMALS OWNED BY AMERICANS WHICH ARE DYING DAILY BY ILLEGALS COMING HERE TO MAKE A BETTER LIFE. Gag me with a taco...

As weird as this sounds, at least inmates are working on the animals LEGALLY!

I have one question, is the plant now paying a better wage then they were prior to the illegal immigrant bust? I seriously doubt the convicted felons would be an issue if the plant was paying a living wage to its employees, but I suspect they've just found another way to get the "cheap labor" they demand. Anyone ever heard the old saying, "you get what you pay for." The processing plants throughout the United States need to start paying a living wage and providing benefits to employees again! Unfortunately, they are now spoiled and only understand the "cheap labor" concept.

Someone should do a clinical study on Peta people to find out just why, or what gene caused diminished mental capacity. This is certainly a headline for "NEWS FROM THE WEIRD."

FELONS SUSPECTED OF ABUSING CHICKENS!! CHICKENS REFUSE TO TESTIFY UNLESS GIVEN IMMUNITY FROM BEHEADING!
