Peter King: Republican Faction 'Self-Righteous and Delusional' on Immigration Stance

    Sunday, March 1, 2015 10:49 AM

Republicans who are threatening to defund the Department of Homeland Security to block the president's executive order on immigration are "self-righteous and delusional," Rep. Peter King said Sunday, blasting the small group's efforts as being "irresponsible."

"There's an element within our party, a wing within the Congress, which is absolutely irresponsible," King told ABC News' "This Week" co-host Martha Raddatz. "They have no concept of reality."

The New York Republican, who serves as chair for the Committee on Homeland Security's Subcommittee on Counterterrorism and Intelligence, and as a member of the Intelligence Committee, emphasized that he is "as opposed to the president's immigration action as they are."

But even though he doesn't agree with the order, King told Raddatz that it's imperative funding continue for the Department of Homeland Security.

On Friday, Congress passed a one-week bill to avert a partial shutdown of the department, as leaders in both political parties quelled a revolt by the House conservatives furious that the measure left Obama's immigration policy intact.

The legislation passed the House by a bipartisan vote of 357-60, and Obama signed it just a few minutes before midnight.

"You see what happened in Denmark, Paris," King told Raddatz. "What ISIS is doing with the beheadings. The people arrested in New York the other night. For these people to be threatening to defund the Department of Homeland Security at a time when the threat streams have never been greater since 9/11, it's irresponsible."

The group consists of "40 or 50 people at most out of a caucus of 237 and a Congress of 435," said King. "We cannot allow such a small group to be dominating and controlling what happens in the United States Congress, especially at a time when we're confronting terrorism. We have American lives at risk."

King called for Republicans to continue standing behind House Speaker John Boehner . Reports this past week indicated that conservatives could challenge the Ohio Republican by making a motion to vacate his chair if the speaker puts forward a "clean" bill to allow $39.7 billion in Homeland Security funding. Conservative Republicans could challenge House Speaker John Boehner next week in a continued showdown over funding the Department of Homeland Security for the rest of the fiscal year.

"He has to find a way this week, as early as possible in the week, once Prime Minister [Benjamin] Netanyahu finishes his speech, to bring the clean bill to the floor for a vote," said King. "We're asking for democracy; let it come to a vote. There's no doubt it will pass. This was an appropriations bill that the Republicans put together."

The bill already passed the Senate with a 68-31 vote, King said, and "it was our bill to begin with."

In the House, King said, "we have to stand behind the speaker and make it clear, we're not going to allow this faction to be dominating and to be impeding what we're trying to do."

If that doesn't happen and the factions don't come together, King warned, "we have no chance of winning in 2016."

Am I delusional, my son is not dead? Qr did republican Peter King mean that my sons death should not be upsetting or emotional?! Here is another reason that the party is two faced! No way in hell can we determine which of the Part is running for office. That is not delusional apparently, Peter King, even you implied it strongly!

This is what happens when you elect a RINO in a liberal state. King feels like he has to appease a large portion of the liberal voters in N.Y. to keep his job in the U.S. Senate. IMO, he's a self-serving idiot who could care less about the country as a whole. King is not unique, many Republicans in liberal states are just like him because their political careers are dependent on appealing to the so-called moderate voters from both parties (Republican & Democrat).

Oh shut up. We're sick and tired of your terror scare tactics just because you chair the committee. We've listened your phony harp for years, and we're fed up with it.

Now hear this, no Republican has any chance of winning the White House in 2016 if you people don't do your jobs and stop this madness of illegal immigration, right here, right now, in its tracks by defunding DHS until there are immigration riders to stop Obama Amnesty and a host of other immigration, labor and civil rights laws he's been breaking since 2009.

Unlike Democrats, Republicans don't care to win just to win. We want to win for a reason, to right a wrong, to save our nation, to lower or change taxes, to reduce poverty, to enhance civil rights, to stop a war or win it, to fix the economy, some specific cause or need to fulfill. So if it's clear that Republicans have no real intention of stopping illegal immigration, the single greatest threat to the national security and economic well-being of our citizens and nation, then Republicans won't get out and vote or they'll vote Libertarian or Democrat, and no one else will have any reason to split a ticket and vote for our candidates, so it's a big giant fail.

So SHUT UP about 2016. This is 2015, and you people were just elected in 2014 to solve the problem of illegal immigration, not whine about winning or not winning the White House in 2016.

Now shut up, do your jobs and defund DHS to stop the Obama Administration from legalizing illegal immigration.

Judy, since 2008 the republicans have been about the next election. McConnell's announced goal was that Obama be a one term president. He failed at that, something hard to do, I might add. Then we make him majority leader, Thus far, after winning the 2014 in a big way, all that they have accomplished is showing us why we don't vote for republicans and we should never again forget it! Now if we can get the democrats to admit that their party is obsolete, we CAN get back to progress!

Yes, and finally in 2012 enough of us said, no more. If you don't stand up for out citizens, our economy, our jobs, our civil rights, then we aren't voting for you. And in 2014 we elected a majority in both chambers of Congress, on the proviso that this majority stop illegal immigration. Yes, we need 6 more GOP Senators to make it easier, but if this majority can't convince 6 Blue Dog Senate Democrats to vote with US to succeed, then they aren't doing their jobs. And giving in to Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Jeh Johnson and Barack Obama is NOT what they were elected to do, so they better use this coming week to get it right, or those who didn't stand up for US will get the boot. Americans are at the end of their ropes, and I don't believe they will elect one of the GOP members of Congress who didn't hold the line and stand their ground.

So they ALL better stop worrying about the White House in 2016 and instead worry about their own job in 2016. I believe in notice and fair warning, so they best take heed.

    Waiting for the next election is making me old. I don't know how many times or how many elections republicans have promised me "next time." Every time and everyone has lied to me!';

America has literally been destroyed while republicans waited for next time. I am sorry, but it is true.
