PHOENIX - Police agencies are changing the way they go after those who manufacturer and profit off methamphetamine.

The Arizona Republic reports the 10-agency drug task force of Phoenix-area police departments are focusing on trafficking organizations with smuggling routes that begin in Mexico and run through Arizona.

The task force uses wiretaps, undercover informants and sting operations.

Agents operating in areas that stretch from Gila Bend to Casa Grande wear camouflage fatigues and use night-vision goggles to track smugglers.

Task force members tell The Republic they are dealing with sophisticated drug-trafficking organizations that have installed their own radio transponders in southern Arizona mountain ranges and use solar-powered radios to stay connected in the desert for days.

The drug dealers are also heavily armed with military-style weapons.
