Phoenix P.D. asked not to enforce SB1070

by Jim Cross/KTAR (July 27th, 2010 PHOENIX -- A pro-immigrant rights group is asking Phoenix police to not comply with Senate Bill 1070 if and when it takes effect.

Carlos Garcia of Puente said at the very least, he wants to know how Phoenix plans to enforce Arizona's tough new immigration law.

"If our community has victims of crime, are they going to be able to call the police without the danger of being deported, without the danger of being separated from their families?" Garcia asked Tuesday.

He said, "To this day, two days before its implementation, we don't have guidelines of how it's going to be implemented. We don't know if officers are trained, we don't know how they're going to handle it."

Another Puente leader, Salvador Reza, said his chief concern is how police resource officers will deal with children who might be in the United States illegally.

"We are coming to ask the city of Phoenix, the same way we asked the school districts, not to comply with this law," Reza said. "This law is a racist law, an apartheid law."

Phoenix police said they would have no comment before U.S. District Court Judge Susan Bolton decided whether or not the law will take effect as scheduled on Thursday. Bolton is studying challenges to the law, which could result in parts or all of it being put on hold until legal issues are settled.

As far as I know the "victims" of crime aren't run through the system. I could be wrong but...
