Rep. Heath Shuler (D-N.C.), along with 112 co-sponsors, has recently introduced the Secure America through Verification and Enforcement (SAVE) Act of 2007. H.R. 4088, the bill's official designation, is unlike the immigration measures considered by the Senate earlier this year, as it rejects amnesty in favor of strong border security.

"Illegal immigration is one of the most pressing issues facing America today. It is estimated that over 12 million people are currently here illegally, and thousands more are coming in every week," said Mr. Shuler. "Americans are very upset at their government for not taking action, and they have a right to be."

According to recent polls conducted by Rasmussen Reports, Americans are clearly upset about the federal government's unwillingness to secure the border. Seventy-seven percent of Americans opposed New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer's plan to give illegal aliens driver's licenses, 73 percent believe police should be able to check a traffic offender's legal status, and 59 percent opposed the recently defeated DREAM Act.

Under the SAVE Act, 8,000 new Border Patrol agents would be added, aerial surveillance would be increased by tapping into Department of Defense satellites, employers would be given an easy way to verify an employee's legal status, a timeline would be set for employers to enroll in an E-verify program, and the judiciary and law enforcement would be given the resources they need to combat illegal immigration.

The SAVE Act would require the Department of Homeland Security, the Internal Revenue Service and the Social Security Administration to share information, as well as expediting the number of deportations by expanding detaining capacity and increasing the number of federal judges.

"It is essential that we organize the necessary 218 yea votes. ... Otherwise, we will be gambling with national security - with the possibility of a President Hillary Clinton having veto power over this bill, and that's not a risk we're willing to take," stated Chris Simcox, president of the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps.
