PHOENIX, June 6 (UPI) -- The sheriff in Phoenix promised to enforce Arizona's controversial immigration law when it takes effect next month despite public opposition to the measure.

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio told a rally Saturday that the July 29 implementation of SB 1070 would be "a magic day" in Arizona.

The outspoken sheriff said he would not turn suspected illegal immigrants over to federal agents for likely deportation but would lock them up as required by the statute. He added that there would be room in the county jail for any influx of new inmates.

Arpaio was among the speakers at a rally in Phoenix held in support of SB 1070. The Arizona Republic said the event drew about 2,000 people despite sweltering heat that topped 100 degrees.

Shade was at a premium and two people were treated for heat-related problems.
