Picnic Killer may be in Mexico

Milwaukee cops: Picnic killer may be in Mexico

    June 1, 2006

    BY DINESH RAMDE

MILWAUKEE -- An illegal immigrant suspected of fatally shooting two picnickers and wounding three others may have fled to Mexico, police said Wednesday.

Police identified the suspect in Monday's shooting as Octaviano Juarez-Corro. He had not been formally charged but police Capt. Timothy Burkee said charges could come this week.

Juarez-Corro, 32, is accused of firing on a group of people at South Shore Park on Memorial Day in what authorities call a domestic dispute possibly related to recently filed divorce papers.

Suspect told to pay child support

The shootings left two people fatally wounded with multiple gunshots to the head, police said. Authorities identified the victims as Raymundo Munoz-Silva, 31, and Julio C. Diaz-Guillen, 17, both of Milwaukee.

Police are working with federal authorities to investigate whether the suspect fled south of the border. ''We know he has Mexican ties. It's a possibility he fled there,'' Burkee said.

The suspected gunman had been served with divorce papers earlier this month by his wife of less than a year, according to court documents. Records show he was ordered to begin paying $565 a month in child support, starting Thursday, for the couple's 3-year-old daughter.

A wave of violence over the Memorial Day weekend left 28 people injured and four people dead, including the two at the park.

The deaths raised the number of homicides in Milwaukee to 38 this year compared to 43 at this point last year.

Suspect in park shooting was legal resident, Mexican citizen

    Associated Press

MILWAUKEE - The man charged with shooting two people to death and wounding three others, including his estranged wife, at a park on Memorial Day was in the United States legally, officials said Monday.

Octaviano Juarez-Corro, 32, had a green card and was considered a legal and permanent U.S. resident, said U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokeswoman Gail Montenegro. Local officials had described him as an illegal immigrant.

Officials suspect Juarez-Corro may have fled to Mexico, where he is a citizen, but have no confirmation, said Milwaukee Police Capt. Tim Burkee.

"We don't know for sure because we don't have good intelligence there," Burkee said. "And we don't have the legal authority to go into Mexico and get him even if we have a warrant."

Juarez-Corro was charged on Friday with two counts of first-degree intentional homicide and three counts of attempted first-degree intentional homicide in last Monday's shooting at South Shore Park along Lake Michigan.

He was accused of killing Raymundo Silva, 31, and Julio Diaz-Guillen, 17, both of Milwaukee, and wounding Eunice Torres, 23, his estranged wife; Jose Saavedra, 21; and Everardo Munoz, 34.

Authorities suspect the shooting was related to a pending divorce with Torres and his desire to see the couple's 3-year-old daughter, who was at the picnic with her mother.
