A 12-year-old Roanoke County girl was raped Monday evening at a motel in the 6500 block of Thirlane Road, Roanoke County police said.

Police arrested Wilberto Hernandez, 30, of El Salvador and charged him with rape.

He is being held at the Roanoke County jail without bond.

Officers found the girl about 9:30 p.m. at the motel after receiving a call that she was being raped. She was taken to a hospital for treatment and has been released, said Lt. Chuck Mason of the Roanoke County Police Department. He said he did not know which hospital she was taken to.

Police are not identifying the motel.

According to police, the girl, who knew Hernandez, walked into his room to retrieve some CDs when he attacked her and started raping her. The girl screamed and tried to fight him off, police said. During the attack, the girl's sister walked into the room and also began screaming, police said.

The 12-year-old was then able to free herself and both girls ran to their mother and told her what had happened, police said. The mother called police, who began to arrive a minute later and arrested Hernandez.

Mason said Hernandez had been staying at the motel but would not say whether the girl lived there also. According to county police, he was working in the United States illegally under an assumed name. Police have contacted federal immigration authorities.
