What ignorance displayed. More people will be hesitant to call police, more people will arm themselves and their homes. That will lead to more court overload. The older America becomes, the less intelligent we become! That will only lead to the absolute demise of what we depended upon for generations, the USA. I do not understand this at all?? Why did we do this to ourselves???

Police Agencies Across the Country Are Hiring More Immigrants, Some Not Even US Citizens

As minority populations increase, police agencies across the country are turning to immigrants to fill the diversity gap among their ranks.

Even though most police departments traditionally only hire U.S. citizens, USA Today reports that the newest trend among police departments is to hire immigrants with legal working permits:

“At a time when 25,000 non-U.S. citizens are serving in the U.S. military, some feel it’s time for more police and sheriff departments to do the same. That’s why the Nashville Police Department is joining other departments to push the state legislature to change a law that bars non-citizens from becoming law enforcement officers.

Department spokesman Don Aaron said they want immigrants who have been honorably discharged from the military to be eligible for service.

‘Persons who have given of themselves in the service to this country potentially have much to offer Tennesseans,’ he said.

‘We feel that … would benefit both the country and this city.'”

A large number of police departments across the country are thought to be less diverse than the areas they serve, so the push for agencies to hire more immigrants isn’t without cause.

According to Colorado State Patrol Sgt. Justin Mullins, immigrants are more likely to take positions in remote parts of his state, which makes the decision to hire them very easy:

“People that want to live there and build a family there and work there is a little more difficult to find. People moving from out of state, or out of the country, if they’re willing to work in these areas, then that’s great for us.”

The specific hiring requirements vary from agency to agency. Some require you to be a citizen during the entire application process, some require that you be a citizen by the completion of training, and some will hire any legal resident. Here are a few examples:

New York City Police Department:

“You do not have to be a United States citizen to take the Police Officer Exam, but you must be a United States citizen on or before the date of hire.”

Houston Police Department:

“Must be a U.S. citizen.”

Chicago Police Department:

“As long as you have an Employment Authorization Document (EAD) from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Proof, such as an Alien Registration Card (Green Card) will be required if you are called for further processing.”

Some believe that hiring immigrants is a safety risk, especially if the immigrants only posses a work permit through President Obama’s immigration executive order.

But according to Ali Noorani at the National Immigration Forum, officer candidates go through “extensive background and security checks” and are therefore safe to give a badge and a gun, immigrant or not.
