PHARR - A Valley man is behind bars on weapons charges.

Federal authorities put 31-year-old Oscar Edwardo Cantu under surveillance. They approached him at his home and he confessed to being recruited by a man in Mexico to buy the 16 AK-47 assault rifles. He took agents to a storage facility where the riffles were stored.

Documents show Cantu was paid just under $1,000 to hold onto to the weapons. Federal agents also found just over $73,000 in cash at Cantu's home. He told them the money was to be used to buy more weapons for his contact in Mexico.

Cantu faces charges of conspiring to export weapons without a federal license.
