POLICE NAB TWO SUSPECTED OF 35 GARAGE THEFTS IN ESCONDIDO

Police nab two suspected of 35 garage thefts

ESCONDIDO -- Police Wednesday added 35 counts of felony theft against two people alleged to have broken into garages throughout Escondido and North County in September, October and November.

The two suspects, Salvador Martinez Saavedra, 29, and Estrella Maria Bautista, 24, also are accused of at least six thefts of exotic birds, police Lt. Craig Carter said.

The garage break-ins occurred between Sept. 12 and Nov. 27, Carter said, and happened in neighborhoods throughout Escondido, with a few elsewhere in North County. The suspects are alleged to have stolen a wide variety of personal property, Carter said, including at least one car.

Saaverda and Bautista were arrested Nov. 27. Police, working in conjunction with the Regional Auto Theft Task Force, tracked them down using tips from victims about the car used in the thefts.

Carter said police believe they were involved in more than 35 break-ins, but so far have haven't gathered enough evidence in other suspected incidents to press charges.

The pair is alleged to have targeted detached garages associated with apartment complexes, Carter said. Police have been able to track down very little of the stolen merchandise, Carter said, and believe the suspects may have sold it on the street instead of at pawn shops.

The investigation is ongoing and police are asking that anyone with information on these cases call (760)839-4722 or Detective Bode Berreth directly at (760)839-4773.

I don't miss apartment complexes and what goes with it one bit. No thieves. No loud stereos. And no worthless rent receipts.

When I see a story such as this one, I go to the San Diego County Sherriff's webpage to check the complete list of charges on the suspects. Suprise, Surprise, both suspects have an Immigration Hold on them by I.C.E. After all we are talking about Escondido here.

Excellent idea! We know how most media sources don't like to mention if people are illegals. Why bother the public with such minor details eh?

Couple suspected of home thefts, stealing exotic birds

    By Kristina Davis
    UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER

    12:46 p.m. December 5, 2007

ESCONDIDO – The discovery of a stolen white pickup led investigators to a couple suspected of burglarizing more than 50 garages and stealing six exotic birds in North County.

Salvador Martinez Saavedra, 29, and Maria Ceballo Bautista, 24, were arrested last week by Escondido police on suspicion of 35 felony theft charges, Escondido Lt. Craig Carter said.

Authorities, however, were not able to recover most of the stolen property, including the six birds snatched from three homes in Escondido and San Marcos.

The birds, including a macaw and two African gray parrots, were likely sold, Carter said.

Bird owner Johan Otter, who had a few birds stolen from his home in unincorporated Escondido, said he still worries about the well-being of his pets. Some were old and needed special care, while others had been his longtime buddies.

“I am relieved these people are apprehended but I am not happy since my pets are still gone,â€
