Police search for 19-month-old baby whose mother was killed

    Associated Press

SAN DIEGO - Police on Monday searched for a 19-month-old girl whose mother was found stabbed to death in her apartment and a man who may have killed her and abducted the child.

Authorities issued an Amber Alert and were looking for Gildardo Rosas Rodriguez, 31, of Mexico, who was last seen driving a 1985 gray Honda Accord. Police said Rodriguez is not the toddler's father, but the relationship between him and the victim is unclear.

The 23-year-old mother was found on the floor of her Linda Vista duplex Sunday morning by her roommate, police said. She had been stabbed to death.

The victim, who was not identified, had recently moved to the area with her 19-month-old daughter, Alejandra Gomez.

Rodriguez was being called "a person of interest" by police. They want to make sure the toddler was safe and to question him about the homicide.

In California, there have been five children located through four Amber Alerts this spring, according to California Highway Patrol.

Mother Fatally Stabbed; Amber Alert Issued For Missing Child

    POSTED: 6:29 am PDT June 12, 2006
    UPDATED: 3:46 pm PDT June 12, 2006

SAN DIEGO -- A statewide search to find a man police believe is responsible for a murder and the kidnapping of a child may have crossed into Mexico.

“It becomes more complicated if it involves another country,” said San Diego Police Department Lt. Kevin Rooney.

An Amber Alert was in effect Monday for a 19-month-old girl who may have been abducted from her Linda Vista home by a man suspected of fatally stabbing her mother.

Police are looking for Alejandra Gomez, who is believed to be with Gildardo Rosas Rodriguez, 31, who also goes by the first names of Gildardo or Fernando.

Rodriguez is suspected of killing Alejandra's 23-year-old mother, who was found stabbed to death at 2295 Ulric St. about 8:30 a.m. Sunday, said SDPD Lt. Jeff Sferra.

"In the morning, the people who owned the home the woman lived in -- she rented a room in the home -- checked the room that the victim was staying in and they found her stabbed to death," said Rooney.

The dead woman's name was being withheld.

“It is awful and frustrating,” said Julie Boyle, the property manager of the home where the victim was staying.

Police questioned Boyle but she said she never knew the victim was renting a room from her tenant.

“We could have taken a picture ID of the lady or check to see if she had a car registration,” said Boyle.

10News learned the victim and the man have three children together and they all live in Mexico.

Police discovered the man is not a U.S. resident. They also cannot locate the missing child’s biological father.

Rodriguez is not Alejandra's father. He may be driving a gray 1985 Honda Accord with license plate 1MGA355, Sferra said.

He is Hispanic, 5 feet 8 inches and 170 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing blue jeans and a T-shirt.

Anyone who sees Alejandra or Rodriguez is asked to call police at (619) 531-2000.

Alert issued for toddler after mom found slain

    By Lisa Petrillo

A national alert has been issued to find a toddler and the man who authorities say took her Saturday night, only hours before the child's mother was found stabbed to death.
The 23-year-old mother was found on the floor of her Linda Vista bedroom around 8:30 a.m. yesterday by her roommate, according to San Diego police.

The victim, who was not identified, had recently moved into the tidy yellow duplex on Ulric Street near Linda Vista Road with her 19-month-old daughter, Alejandra Gomez. (Earlier reports placed the child at 16 months old.)

Police have issued a national alert to find Alejandra and the man they say took her late the night before, Gildardo Rosas Rodriguez. The relationship between Rodriguez, the victim and her child is unclear.

Rodriguez, 31, is believed to live in Mexico; he was last seen driving a 1985 four-door Honda Accord, California license 1MGA355. The Honda is charcoal gray with hood damage on the right side and a broken left taillight with clear tape over the bulb.

Rodriguez is being called “a person of interest” by police. They want to make sure the toddler is safe and question him about the homicide.

A photograph of the toddler shows her with dark brown eyes and black hair. She is shown wearing an alligator costume. Her lips are covered with a red-lipsticked kiss someone had apparently just given her before snapping the picture.

Authorities on both sides of the border have been contacted to be on the lookout for Rodriguez and the child. He is described as 5 feet 8 inches tall and 170 pounds. He was last seen wearing jeans and a T-shirt.

Authorities are asking anyone with information about this crime or missing child to call police or Crime Stoppers at (88 580-TIPS.

The Amber Alert issued for Alejandra includes posting signs on freeways and major roads, as well as Web alerts to subscribers to the program aimed at finding kidnapped children. In California, there have been five children located through four Amber Alerts this spring, according to California Highway Patrol.

Search is widened for toddler kidnapped after mom is killed

    By Joe Hughes
    UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER
    June 13, 2006

The search for little Alejandra Gomez widened yesterday as San Diego police asked federal agencies along the entire Southwest border to check license-plate readers for the car used in her abduction.

The body of the toddler's mother was found by her roommate Sunday in Linda Vista. The 23-year-old had been stabbed to death.

Authorities are looking for the 1985 four-door Honda Accord belonging to the victim's estranged husband, Gildardo Rosas Rodriguez.

“Solving the homicide is important, of course, but we have a child to worry about,” said San Diego police homicide Lt. Kevin Rooney. “That's why we are widening the net in the system, to see if the vehicle could have crossed into Mexico at a place other than Otay Mesa or San Ysidro.”

Rodriguez, 31, is not the child's father and has no custodial rights, Rooney said.

Police believe that sometime late Saturday or early Sunday, the woman was killed and her 19-month-old daughter taken. The woman's name has not been released.

Authorities declined to detail the crime scene but said there was no evidence of forced entry.

Hampering the case is the inability of detectives to talk to the dead woman's relatives, who live in the interior of Mexico and have not been located. Mexican liaison officers with San Diego police were involved in the search. The FBI has been consulted.

Police said Rodriguez and the woman lived together for a time in San Diego, but not since she gave birth and moved to the duplex on Ulric Street near Linda Vista Road. Rodriguez is believed to live in Mexico.

Both are Mexican nationals and the child is a U.S. citizen. Nothing is known about the child's father.

Neighbors contacted yesterday said they did not hear or see anything unusual between late Saturday and early Sunday. None had intimate knowledge of the woman and her daughter.

Police reported some progress in finding out about Rodriguez after locating some of his relatives in San Diego. “They are cooperating,” Rooney said.

A national Amber Alert was issued early Sunday and included posting signs on freeways and major roads, as well as Web alerts to subscribers to a program aimed at finding kidnapped children.

Rodriguez was described as Latino, 5 feet 8 inches and 170 pounds. He was last seen wearing jeans and a T-shirt. The Honda he was driving had the California license plate number 1MGA355. It is charcoal gray with hood damage on the right side and a broken left taillight with clear tape over the bulb.

Authorities are asking anyone with information to call police or Crime Stoppers at (88 580-TIPS.

Missing 19-Month-Old Child Found In Mexico
    Jermaine Ong
    Web Editor
A 19-month-old girl missing since last weekend was found safe in Mexico, according to the San Diego Police Department.

Information led authorities to Puebla, Mexico, where they located Alejandra Gomez Wednesday night.

The girl was reported missing on June 11 after her mother Emilia Gomez was found stabbed to death at a Linda Vista residence.

Police said they believed Gomez's estranged husband Gildardo Rodriguez was responsible for his wife's death and the kidnapping of the child.

Rodriguez remains at large, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Mexican law enforcement continue to pursue him.

San Diego County officials are working with Child Protective Services to return the child to the U.S.

Missing girl found safe in Mexico

    SIGNONSANDIEGO NEWS SERVICES

    4:56 p.m. June 15, 2006

SAN DIEGO – A 19-month-old girl whose estranged stepfather is a suspect in the stabbing death of her mother and in the child's kidnapping was found unharmed in Mexico, but the stepfather remained at large Thursday.

The mother, Emilia Gomez, was found stabbed to death Sunday in the room she rented from a Linda Vista family.

Her estranged husband, Gildardo Rodriguez, who is not the girl's father, was last seen leaving the home with little Alejandra Gomez the night before, according to San Diego Police Lt. Kevin Rooney.

Information led detectives to Puebla, Mexico, about 60 miles southeast of Mexico City, where Alejandra was found Wednesday night at a residence, Rooney said.

The FBI was instrumental in coordinating law enforcement response in Mexico, he said.

Rodriguez was still at large, and the FBI and Mexican law enforcement agencies continued to search for him, Rooney said.

SDPD homicide detectives obtained an arrest warrant on June 13 charging Rodriguez with kidnapping, Rooney said.

He is also a suspect in connection with the woman's death, but has not been charged with her murder, Rooney said.

Mexico tends not to return suspects possibly facing the death penalty in the United States.

Detectives are working with San Diego County Child Protective Services to return Alejandra to the United States, Rooney said.
