MEXICO CITY - The commander of a federal police detail credited for a number of significant drug busts at the Mexico City airport was shot to death by unidentified assailants as he left his home early Thursday.

Assistant Federal Police Inspector Pedro Madrigal died of his wounds at a public hospital in Mexico City, authorities announced. His killing came amid increasing attacks against police commanders along Mexico's northern border.

The assailants opened fire on Madrigal from a passing taxi cab, hitting him five times in the chest.

Under Madrigal's command, the federal police detail at the airport seized over 700 pounds (320 kilograms) of cocaine, 44 pounds (20 kilograms) of heroin, US$119,000 in cash and detained 450 undocumented migrants.
