FOUNTAIN — A man has been arrested on suspicion of forcing a Greyhound bus to crash into an Interstate 25 guardrail after threatening its driver and passengers, authorities said Tuesday.

Mexican national Edmundo Arellanes-Audelo, 47, faces charges of felony menacing with a weapon, assault, reckless endangerment, felony criminal mischief and hindering public transportation.

The Denver-bound bus was heading north on I-25 near South Academy Boulevard when Arellanes-Audelo threatened the driver and the 26 other passengers with a knife, Fountain police said. While trying to attack the driver, he grabbed the steering wheel so the bus crashed into the guardrail, a news release said.

Arellanes-Audelo broke out a window and tried to flee but was stopped by a passerby who pulled out a gun, police said. He dropped the knife and was taken into custody when police arrived.

A man armed with a knife is suspected to have been the cause of a Greyhound bus crash along Interstate 25 Monday night.

Officers from the Fountain Police Department arrested Edmundo Arellanes-Audelo, 47, on the interstate near South Academy Boulevard. Arellanes-Audelo faces charges of felony menacing with a weapon, assault, reckless endangerment, felony criminal mischief and hindering public transportation, according to a press release.

The bus reportedly was headed to Denver when Arellanes-Audelo allegedly threatened both the driver and his fellow passengers with a knife.

“He gained access into the secured area of the bus and attempted to attack the driver while purposely grabbing the steering wheel,” according to Fountain Police.

After the bus crashed, a passenger reportedly confronted Arellanes-Audelo and he attempted to flee by breaking one of the bus’ windows.

An armed passer-by confronted him as he exited the bus, police said. The passer-by reportedly showed Arellanes-Audelo his gun, convinced him to drop the knife and held him until police arrived.

Some of the passengers reported minor injuries from the crash, according to police.

    CSP // Fountain police

FOUNTAIN, Colo. – Police say the man who threatened Greyhound bus passengers and its driver, which led to a crash near Fountain Monday evening, was held at gunpoint by a passerby until police arrived to the scene.

Edmundo Arellanes-Audelo, 47, faces felony criminal mischief, felony menacing, hindering public transportation, assault and reckless endangerment charges after the incident, which happened around 6:30 p.m. Monday.

Arellanes-Audelo was allegedly threatening the bus driver and 26 passengers who were on board. He was able to get into the secure area of the bus, started attacking the driver and grabbed the steering wheel to try and crash the bus, Fountain police said.

The bus did eventually crash into a guardrail on Interstate 25 near the S. Academy Boulevard exit. It had been en route to Denver.

Police say a passenger on the bus confronted Arellanes-Audelo but he broke a window out of the bus and escaped. But he wasn’t free for long.

Police say a passerby who was armed with a gun stopped and pointed the weapon at Arellanes-Audelo. He dropped the knife and was held there until police arrived.

Police say Arellanes-Audelo was medically cleared and booked into the El Paso County jail. Police said some people had minor injuries when the bus crashed.
