Poll: McCain Back on Top in Arizona
By Regina Sass
According to the latest poll from the Rasmussen Association, Arizona Senator John McCain has rebounded in the standings in his home state.
McCain has shown much improvement in this latest poll over one taken last June when his involvement in the immigration debate sent his numbers plummeting to the bottom. Back then, he had a favorable rating of 47% and an unfavorable one of 51%. Now he stands at 63% favorable and 35% unfavorable.

As recently as September, his favorable rating was at 48% and he was behind former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson in the general election race in Arizona.

A month ago, he was leading New York Senator Hillary Clinton by 12% and now he leads her 57% to 34%. He also has a lead over the other two top Democrats. He leads Illinois Senator Barack Obama 55% to 33%, and former North Carolina Senator John Edwards 56% to 30%.

The other leading Republicans also have a lead over Clinton in Arizona, but none of them as large as McCain's. Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani has a lead over Clinton of 47% to 38%, just about the same as he did last month. With former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, the lead is very slim, 45% to 41%, which is a virtual tie when you take into consideration the margin of error.

McCain is not only doing better in Arizona, but nationally as well, at least among the Republican voters. In the first in the Nation New Hampshire Primary he is tied for second and has picked up the endorsement of one of the most influential newspapers in the state, the Manchester Union Leader.

He is doing very well in the overall national picture as well. He is one of five of the Republican Candidates who have a double digit level of support.

As it is with the other border states, immigration is a number one issue with the voters in Arizona with 68% of the likely voters saying that if a law enforcement officer pulls a driver over for any type of traffic violation, the officer should check to see if the driver is in the county legally and 71% say if they are here illegally, they should be deported.

Also, 77% believe employers should be allowed to require that their employees only speak English when they are at work. This is just about equal with the national average. Meanwhile, just 10% say this would be some sort of racism or bigotry. And 61% believe that ballots as well as all other government documents should be in English only and 36% say they should be in both English and Spanish.

Democratic Governor Janet Napolitano gets a good performance rating as well, with 58% saying her performance as either good or excellent, 21% saying fair and 19% saying poor. As far as the President is concerned, 24% say he is doing a good or excellent job, 16% give him a fair rating and 41% say he is doing a poor job.
