Poll: Most back tough new law on immigrants

A poll released Tuesday indicates that a majority of Arizonans support a recent court ruling that undocumented immigrants can be charged with a felony for paying smugglers to bring them into the country.
A Maricopa County Superior Court judge on June 9 upheld an Arizona law passed last August that created the state crime of immigrant smuggling. The ruling gave prosecutors a tool to target smugglers and charge their customers as conspirators.
According to the poll, 65 percent of voters surveyed agreed with the court ruling, 30 percent disagreed and 5 percent had no opinion.
The poll, conducted June 15-18 by KAET-TV and Arizona State University's journalism school, was based on phone interviews with 384 voters and had a margin of error of 5 percentage points.
